Question 95 4.0 chugging, missing, jerking,

comes and goes. have tried fuel inj cleaner, gas treatment, you name it (in the tank). will run fine for a few days and then starts again. when stopped (in gear...it's auto), sometimes feels like will stall. 35-45mph level rpm 'bucks' like ya read about...again..sometimes. have read several forums where suggestions are dpfe or egr (are they the same thing?) or maf or IAC solenoid or......???????? want to try to fix it soon. first time attempting posting on any forum for this info. any ideas?? thanks much.

I'll ask the first question now, does your truck have a check engine light on? If it does you need to find out what trouble codes have been stored. Since your truck is a 95 you should be able to go to your local autozone and they will tell you what codes are stored. Write them down and post them here.

If not, several ideas come to my mind but I'm more familiar with the older Rangers so I'll wait and see what some more knowledgable folks say. Good luck.

this has been going on for about 8 months now. sometimes the light comes on and after a few days of fuel injector cleaner and treatment and several cycles of running without 'chugging' the light goes out. the local autozone doesn't (or can't) (or won't) do rangers....don't ask me why. but from what i've read on several other boards, this is a common problem and the codes and light don't neccessarily reflect or diagnose the problem. ...is the egr valve the same as the dpfe? and would you recommend 'cleaning' the maf (or does mine have a map?). thanks.

No, the DPFE and EGR valve are two different components. The DPFE is the vacuum switch that controls the EGR valve I believe. Cleaning things never hurts, as long as you do it right. The technical info thread has some good info. Would be nice to know why that light is on though. I believe for around $30 you can buy a OBD II code scanner at Harbor Freight if you have one in your area. Wal-Mart also carries them for around 100 bucks. I don't see why checking a Ranger would be any different than any other car, maybe they just didn't want to mess with it.

You, sir, have patience, if nothing else!

How anyone else can be willing to run their vehicle into possible ruin for that long....I don't know what to say.

As noted, before you start guessing and tossing money and extra wasted gas at this, check the codes. And buy a Haynes or Chilton's manual or get a Ranger CD manual off Ebay. You seriously need to learn how simple these things are to maintain and how to run them if you let something as basic as trouble code diagnosis go this haywire. Heck, if you feel over your head with this (my first impression = yes, you are), find a good non-stealership shop to diagnose and repair for you. All the other stuff about DPFE, EGR, etc, all came from a code check. This stuff wasn't guessed at.

(Someone had to say that!)

Since your Ranger is a 1995, it may not be OBD II equipped - could very well still be EEC IV - OBD1. If so, the connector for the code reader is on the side of the battery box closest to the firewall. Autozone et.al. should still be able to get code(s) for you so you can post them here and we can help.

Welcome to FTE!

I agree, getting the codes pulled would be the best place to start.

In addition to what has been suggested, I also think it would be a good idea to change the fuel filter and check the fuel pressure if you can.

fuel press-good. fuel filter-1yr old. over-my-head? possibly, but i don't think so. just tryin' to learn. yup, reading the code is a good place to start but... i've read too many posts on other sites where they DID have their codes read and the answer was change the egr. that didn't do it. change the dpfe and shazam! so... i was simply askin' you folks, seein' if one of you might say 'i know zactly what it is, seen it a million times an' all ya gotta do is..........' i'm leaning toward the dpfe, simply because of my symptoms are the exact same symptoms of those who went the code route and erroneously bought an egr only to find out it was just gettin' bad info from the sensor. thanks for all the input. will update if'n the light comes back on and i can get it read. i'm assuming that the codes will stay in the system for a time even if the light goes out (say 50 cycles or so), but it's been out for quite some time. still running 'chuggy' tho so the light could re-appear anytime now. r/steve

update on chugging...

ran two tanks of gas through before posting. all is well. apparently the info coming from the dpfe was bad. running like a champ now.

new issues (old really, i'm just getting to them).

intermittent airbag light.

intermittent abs light.

after searching this knowledge base (i'm verrrry impressed), i'm suspecting the vss or chaffing wires for the abs light.

the airbag light.... i have no idea.
95 4.0 4wd (not sure if 2abs or 4abs re: abs light).

anyone have intermittent airbag light with simple solution? thanks.

I have the same problem with my ranger(1994 4.0) "cutting" out on me. I tried replacing the air and fuel filters as well as adding some injector cleaner(2 tanks). I just read the codes and the best I can figure read 225, 221 and a 111. I will replace the plugs and wires next as it has been 75,000 since last done. The CE light has not came on throughout this rough stretch. Any ideas regarding the codes? Thanks in advance!

The 225 is a knock sensor code, which is not applicable, since your 4.0L doesn't have a KS. And there is no such thing as a code 221. So my guess is that the EEC Tests weren't done correctly. Don't sweat it, because it usually takes more than a few tries to get the hang of pulling the codes, but once you do, it's easy from there. So give it another shot.
