what- Big Truck Muffler is a muffler designed to replace the restrictive stock muffler on 1999+ models. cut out the old muffler, put the new one in. i believe you have to swivel the "s" shaped (a little too exaggerated) pipe in front of the muffler to make it fit. fits the stock sized exhaust piping.
why- improves flow, belive it reduces backpresure and lowers EGT's
quoted from BCD's site- You'll need to cut the hangers off the old muffler and weld them onto the BTM in approximately the same places. The hanger ends that attach to the truck are not moved.
Just clamping the pipes onto the muffler will probably be adequate, but any decent muffler man is going to clamp it together then weld it up tight. Since you must have a welding machine handy anyway - to weld the hangers from the old muffler onto the new muffler - it's not much more work to go ahead and use the same welding machine to finish the job.
You'll need two 3.5" muffler clamps. Not available at most auto parts stores. Not available at most muffler shops that specializes in cars and light pickups. Order online or you may have to go to a truck parts store to get them.
The trick to the install is to remove the "S" pipe in front of the muffler and turn it over - 180 degrees. The result is a straight shot from the exhaust pipe to the tail pipe - and the BTM needs a straight shot.
The BTM is several inches longer than the stock muffler. So part of the install is to remove the right amount of exhaust pipe near the S pipe. Measure carefully.
sorry, i cant tell you. i dont have one on my truck, so i wouldn't know. but since they are much less restrictive, i would guess that they would increase sound some. probably not enough to be uncomfortable.
i have this on my 02... not a huge increase in sound... i kinda like it... you do hear the turbo more, and the "flutter" of the turbo... i like that too... it has helped lower egts, especially under high rpm and while towing... this is a good way to improve your exhaust without spending serious $$... i do not think this makes your exhaust system as good as say a complete 4" system from turbo back...
We did this mod recently to our 2000 Crew Cab. Nice change in tone over stock, noticeable difference in acceleration and turbo noise. Did the BHAF #6637 filter mod about the same time. Great improvement in overall performance for not much money.
On the BTM install, we did not reuse the S-pipe section of the exhaust. We cut the old muffler out of the system. then added about 4"-6" of tubing to the rear/outlet of the muffler to join it to the remaining exhaust. We then mated the inlet section to the front of the remaining exhaust system. The angles of where the inlet and outlet "meet" are somewhere near 160* to 170*, just about straight in and out.
By installing the new muffler this way we reduced the labor time involved and removed the two 90* bends of the S-pipe. The exhaust now has a very straight path. The muffler does angle down to the front but the ground clearance is still better than what was there with the stock muffler.
Hope this helps,

Reason: grammar...
Dredged-up this (good) thread up in a search....
OK THEN, sent this as message to BK and QFD90 and so - heck- I'll just post it:
BK, you said:

BK, I wonder if you could please add to this... I have a 2000 CC F-350 (dually) and I am looking to do the same installation. I looked under my truck and the muffler appears to be one piece from the tail end to the tailpipe. So, I guess I take the Sawzall and cut the muffler off close to the rear end of the muffler and cut the "S" pipe just ahead of it's connection?. So does the new BTM have a female (rear) end that fits over the existing stock pipe? Then from the muffler front end .... I would need say a 6" M/F piece with a male end into the muffler and the female end onto the cut-off forward stock pipe? And to make all this work I would need 3- 3-1/2" muffler pipe clamps?
I just want to get all this stuff together before I go laying on my back....
Just wanted some more info on the BTM, where to get it and how much to pay for it, what it does, and why. Thanks for any input.
I have one, got it from blackcloud as well, best spot imop. My only draw back is now that I have it, made such an improvement, I am wondering what a full 4" or 5" system would do. HMMMM......
After spending exhaustive work hours surfing FTE threads, my guess is that the BTM gives you maybe a 75% imrovement over stock... (but at least 50%?) and actually makes sense to my frustrated (hungover) somewhat technical mind. This is well spent $$$ and in accordance with my (cheapskate) economic views. Spending hundreds more for the last 25% of performance available is for those that have more $$$ than me at this time.
My extended warranty has got 30k to go... It expressly forbids exhaust 'system' modifications. Now is a freakin' muffler 'replacement' a SYSTEM Mod? I think I can argue it is not (may have to resurrect Perry Mason). But a turbo-back replacement with a MBRP 4" SS (which I really want) IS a system Mod (I think).

Just my $0.02
No doubt about it that it is far superior to the stock muffler, and I in every way am very pleased with it. just makes me wonder what a 4 inch system would do. but like you I am in the same boat, and that will have to what a few more nautical miles.
