1999 Ford Ranger P0401 Code
This is my first message in the ford-trucks.com world. I have 2 ford trucks, a 1999 Ford Ranger 2.3L 5sp, and a 2005 F150 4.2L V6 auto.
I recently replaced all 8 of the spark plugs, cables, and the timing belt in the ranger. To make life easier (supposedly), I removed the upper half of the intake manifold during the operation. I replaced everything and used a new gaset on the upper half of the intake manifold. Everything ran fine, but....I got the dreaded P0401 code a couple of days later.
I suspected that it might be the gasket between the EGR and the upper half of the intake manifold (I disconnected the EGR to allow removal of the manifold), so I installed a new one of those. Same problem....
Any ideas? I'm certain I must have stretched a hose or something. I'm hoping it isn't the metal tube going down to the exhaust pipe. I'm open to any suggestions/teasing regarding the matter.
Sincerely,
GJN

Most often a P0401 code is the result of a bad DPFE sensor.
If you do a search of this forum using "P0401" as your keyword you will come up with several previous threads that you can read through that discuss the code in detail.
The DPFE itself is a high failure item... and usually will cause a P0401 when it malfunctions... may be just coincidence...
The DPFE is a small box with two small hoses going to it.. usually bolted to the side.. or rear of the intake. It can be made out of metal or plastic. The new design ones have a plastic housing and are fully interchangeable with the metal ones.
Ford actually has a TSB that states if P0401 is the only fault code to replace the DPFE before doing any further diagnostics. I guess they got tired of paying an extra hour for each warranty replacement of DPFE sensors hehe, but it makes sense being this is the problem 99% of the time.
Good luck
