Backing plate is worn out in th 6:00 position. Yes, I doubt the backing plate was ever ment to be replaced, probably headed to the junkyard for those. There doesn't seem to any play in the hub, and the backing plate didn't appear to be bent towards the drum. Odd thing is that the drum won't even sit well over the brakes. Most drums I've seen will slide right on and hold in position. This one requires you to tighten down the lugs over the drums to keep it in place while you spin it. None of the other wheels have this problem.

What would it take to determine wether or not the housing is bent? I still plan on a rebuild, it seems to be leaking pretty bad. This truck has been beaten and abused by it's previous owner. It's pushing 300K (a testament to the endurance of the 300 I6/T-18 combo) and it's been worked on by a few generations of ham fisted hot rodders. I got the truck four months ago and it's still on it's original tank of gas. One of these days though...

I think your axle housing -- the whole "rear end" is bent on that side. Kinked at the spring perches I'd bet, which is why the excessive wear is occuring at 6:00 PM position.

Visualize a housing that is kinked and an axel that remains mostly "straight". Imagine where it would contact the backing plate.

Beats me what you got happening, but it ain't normal, that's for sure.
