Question Need trans cooler on '02 Explorer?

I have an '02 Explorer w/ 4.0 H.O. engine, auto trans., factory tow package w/ 2" hitch. I use it to pull my boat w/ a weight around 2,000 to 2,500 lbs. Do I need to have one installed? Is it a job I can do and if so, where can I find instructions?

Factory Tow Package came with a tranny cooler, albeit a small one, so I personally do not think you need to add one. I used to tow a 3500lb boat with the older 4.0 Explorer, 96 I think, and it did fine, it was no race car, but towed fine. Towing that light of a load will be no issue for your rig.

The factory tow pacage listing does not list a cooler. Are you talking about the small unit behind the bumper?

Actually, I amy have been speaking incorrectly. "Most Towing Packages" that I know of on all makes and models include a transmission cooler. It IS possible that yours does not have one. If it does, it will be a small one in front of the radiator most likely. I would be surprised if a factory tow package didnt come with a Tranny Cooler.

In any case, that is a light load and you may not need one, but if you dont have one, it can only help. They are not expensive and are not difficult to install. I think even Autozone and Advanced carry them on the shelf.

you wont need one but they are very cheap insurance! it's extemely easy to install one. in fact go to a junkyard and find one they are all over the place, no need to spend big bucks on a new one.

basically you just splice into your tranny line. place the cooler in somehwere in the middle of your radiator whereever you have room OR any where that gets lots of air flow. just make sure to top off your tranny fluid cause it will increase the capacity a little, which that in itself can help keep things cool.

You really shouldn't need to add another tranny cooler with the weight you're towing, plus the 4.0L has an engine oil cooler with the factory tow package.

Well my concern is trying to maintain speed when climbing hills on the expressway. I do not use overdrive, but can feel the drag on the motor.

That's why I traded my '02 XLT 4.0L for the '04 XLT 4.6L I have now; when towing my boat/trailer rig it struggled on hills with 4 people and gear on board. It never ran hot, just was doggy and sometimes I even had to drop it into 2nd gear to pull a steep hill.
