02 explorer 4.0 sohc engine help!!!

I searched around for a few hours and couldnt find any information on this. Have an 02 (10/01) explorer 4x4 w/ 4.0 sohc vin e. My repair info says I can remove the heads without pulling the engine. Two dealers said I have to remove the engine but I can't find that any where else in any repair info. Timing chain appears to be in the rear. Anyone know? Does a plastic plenum make a difference? Thanks in advance!

I've never heard of anyone being able to replace the rear timing chains without removing the engine. There is a front and rear set.

Do you know where I can find a diagram on the rear timing chain? I have alldata and it says nothing about a rear chain or removing the engine to remove the heads.

Send me your email address in a private message.

If your Alldata Index reads like the Ford manual Index then it lists the "Timing Drive Components —Camshaft Drive Cassette, LH " under the " In-Vehicle Repair" topic. It doesn't list the RH because it is not an "In Vehicle" repair procedure. It kind of had me stumped there for a minute until I realized what "Section" I was looking at.

The Chilton reads:
PATH: Engine Mechanical > Engine Mechanical Components > Timing Chain Cover, Chain, Sprockets, & Seal > Removal & Installation > 4.0L Engine > SOHC Engine (VIN E)

SOHC Engine (VIN E)

1.Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
2.Drain the engine oil.
3.Remove or disconnect the following:
*Negative battery cable
* Engine from the vehicle
*Oil pan
*Engine front cover
*Cylinder heads
Ford manual STILL says you can R&R the right cylinder head IN THE VEHICLE though .......... IDK !!!!

READ , AND

Just as a follow up. I still could not find the info on alldata. I did have to remove the engine as you confirmed. Thanks for your help.
