Engine Won't crank

86 F-250, 460 auto trans.
Won't turn over.
Batt good, Starter good.
Used a remote switch at the solenoid started right up.
Adjusted neutral safe switch.
Replaced ignition switch also.
Any ideas?

When you replaced the ignition switch did you check the rod that engages it from the key? Maybe an 86 doesn't have it. But on my truck (84) there is a rod that runs from the column at the top down the to ignition switch on the collumn under the dash. Maybe the end is broken and the rod is not pushing the switch at all. Check the continuity of the ignition wire going to the solenoid. Also, remove the ignition wire from the solenoid, turn the key to start and you should be getting 12 volts at the wire. Of course, make sure you have a good ground on the other lead of your meter.

Yeah, I made sure that the rod to the ignition switch was operational.
Wasn't easy in that cramped space. Plus the spring in the ignition switch moves the key back to the run position.
Checked for voltage at the start wire on the solenoid, with a good ground.
Nothing.
I did notice I have no reverse light and the dang thing popped out of park when I was monkeying with the neutral safe switch and linkage.
The dealer gets it tomorrow. Which really hurts my pride and pocket book.

You dont need to take it to a dealer for this, we can help.

do you mean you used a jumper wire on the solenoid and it fired up?

Sounds like your neutral safety switch is gone. Espically since your backup lights are also dead.

Yes! Put your shifter into neutral and try starting, into park and try starting. Replace the neutral switch. You'll save lots of money and the hassel of dealing with dealers.

If when you tried to start and you hear a low thud or click at the starter solenoid but no start then you need to replace starter solenoid even though it seemed to work because you hear it click. The contacts may be bad and not conduct enough power to the starter. I changed mine and everything was ok.
