I have never owned a Dell or HP computer but I do own an HP printer. For the money, IMO, HP makes a dang good printer. My girlfriends mom bought a Dell computer and has had to have it worked on 3 times in the last year. The pc is just a year old.
My pc is going on 2 years old, was built by my oldest son and stays on 24/7 with no problems other than losing my internet connection. That's a router problem.
My first PC was an IBM ... albeit a dinosaur compared to todays PC's. Started out whith Win 95 on it and upgraded to 98 plus a tad more RAM. Only problems with it were virus caused and a reformat took care of that.
Ive got a Dell now and haven't had a single issue with it either. I'd like to double the RAM to at least 512 and it'd be about perfect. My needs are pretty simple though.
I worked for a company that used Dell computers to run the entire operation. We never had a problem with a one of them, and yes, we had a lot of programs running on each contract...one of which was HP Tech support... and it was our largest contract and totally busy all the time!! Our HP techies received more training than most other contracts. But..I think HP is also working at sending its tech support over seas. Not positive about that, though.
The only thing I don't like about my Dell, is that I need help reformatting and I hate calling India or where ever it is to get help. Some of those folks speak pretty good english, but some..well, you might as well be talking to a Chinaman, speaking Echinesebonics!
At work (in design) we use Sun computers. It gets the job done. I-DEAS... that's another story... At my old job we used HP for design and that computer couldn't keep AutoCAD running for the life of it!! I swear you'd have to save every 30 seconds or you'd risk re-doing whatever it was you had just done... after the reboot, that is. Wasted a lot of time doing that...
I have a Dell now, and our PCs here are Dells... they perform just fine. For personal computing, as long as it's not an emachine it should be fine (although I've actually heard bad things about HP). I generally see more older people (who generally do less with their computers) taking their PCs in for repairs than younger ones... perhaps it is operator error attributing to these "repairs"? Older people are generally more trusting and when they get an email chain letter telling them to delete essential files because they're allegedly virus files, they usually do it. Happened at work... I tried to stop the madness, but it was too late for some...
I once sold 200 PC's to a customer of mine. Problem was I didn't have 200 PC's. It was fairly simple to buy the parts and assemble them, and they performed pretty well. My biggest mistake was using $10 keyboards which had a high failure rate. I bought my current PC (an HP) because I was too lazy to build one although I did add a bigger HD.

My company has more than 1,000 HP pcs. For the most part, no big problems.
(They trade 'em in every 3 years, though.)
I have an HP laptop on my bench right now that the owner (a co-worker) has had for 4 years. That problem. . . . Pilot Error. 71 viruses and NO anti-virus program. Duh.
I bought a Dell PC for my wife, for her school work. (She's finally going back forher degree!!!!) She picked it out. I bought it. It too, has a problem with Pilot Error.
This PC screams, though. (So does she!)
I have both a Dell and a HP. I'm very satissfied with both. The Dell is a lap top and the HP is a home type computer. My son in law added a extra internal 100 gig hardrive and 896 megs of ram to my HP. They both serve there purpose very well.
At our business we use a IBM laptop and 3 HP desktops. We have to have someone in a couple times a year for the IBM due to problems. No problems with the HP desktops. We also have all HP printers and swap them out every 3 years. Seems that during the 3rd year we always have problem with the printers. At home I use a Dell laptop and desktop with a HP printer. No problems with any of the home stuff.
