1984 smog pump?

Does the 1984 2.8 have a smog pump attached to the engine? When I was looking at it today it looks like there is one under the alternator. I don't have a belt routing diagram so I can't be sure. If there is one, that is definitely one piece of equipment that's coming out, along with the old R-12 A/C system.

yep its the air pump It has hoses running do to the exaust system and all over the place. Why take it out? Unless you are removing all the smof equitment and going stright no emissions. I live in California and my 84 goes through with flying colors. Never once had a problem with the emissions parts of my truck.

Mainly because I see it as a power drang on the 2.8 and since I live in a non-emissions area, I'm not worried about passing any tests. I'm going to do the same thing with the A/C since it doesn't work anyway and needs to be converted to R-134a.

I figure that with proper tuning and a good exhaust system, emissions will be as good as they are with the air pump. Plus, some of the tubing from the pump is missing, so I don't think that its working properly right now. However, I've read that this pump does help the vehicle run better in cold temps; can someone verify this for me? Also, does anyone have a good diagram of the hose system for air pump? The Haynes manual sucks on this.

hmm maybe if the whole system was working. I mean the egr returns some exaust gases back into the cycle, but moslty cold starting is helped by the choke plate and the heat pipe that brings heat up from the driver side exaust manifold into the intake plumbing. I know that does a fair amout to bring the engine up to temp quickly.

My thoughts exactly, that's why I'm not too worried about the air pump and other emissions recycling stuff on the engine. I'll leave it on for now since I need to get iut running for winter but will remove the misc piping and stuff to clean up the engine compartment.

I also need to either rebuild or replace the carb since the OEM one is leaking gas, so that might also help improve the engine's operation w/o all the computer crap on it.
