Smog component question

Does the EFI/computer have anything to do with the smog components on the 87-96 F150s? Or are they two seperate systems?

I've got a build in mind for my 94 using one of those aftermarket plug-and-play EFI systems, but wasn't sure how the smog stuff, like the egr, coffe can looking canister, smog pump (if applicable) tied into the whole thing.

I would like to be able to pass inspection without issues is why I'm asking.

Can your inspection place make exceptions for aftermarket EFI?

It's doable to swap the computer, and for the early Ford EFI's this makes a great idea! Because the early types would run batch fired injection where 2 banks of 3 cylinders would fire wasting all sorts of fuel which required that air pump to burn the wasted fuel in the catalytic converters.

When I build my '78, I used a lot of the '96 harness for the VEMS. The '96 distributor doesn't have any advance or Ignition module. I epoxied a magnet and HALL sensor into the cap and rotor for cam sync, and wired the signal output to the EFI for triggering. Timed it to 60* BTDC and *poof* works ;D I now have a chyrsler wasted spark coil from a minivan and dual platinum spark plugs which in theory should run a long time. And a GM MAP sensor out of a Renix Jeep, and VM Beetle Wide Band O2 Sensor, and a slew of other junkyard pickings... Plan to utilize a flex fuel sensor when one becomes available in the junkyard and maybe a MAF sensor.

I plan on using EGR, and the coffee can (Vacuum reservoir for various vacuum thingies like heater controls), my rebuilt has the none smog head as I am not dumping fuel into the engine. Not sure if there are any detrimental effects to this, maybe increase the chance of a cracked head? I donno... I cannot fathom why ford engineers would dump so much fuel in just to burn in t he catalytic converters, but hoping it's not an important reason.

Using an aftermarket EFI has a lot of rewards, but does come with a great wall of learning.
