I have to replace the alternator on my '95 F-150 4.9. I can't quite figure out how to take tension off of the drive belt. The Haynes manuel suggests it is simple but there were no pics. Does anyone know how to do this? I tried to search the forum but I seem to have lost my 'search' capability?
Normally you just loosen the tensioner with a long handled ratchet/breaker bar, which takes a bit of muscle to hold while you take the belt off. You dont try to remove the tensioner , you're just backing the spring pressure off.
I hope this link helps: http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBr...3d8009f283.jsp
Thanks for the assistance. You're correct. I eventually figured it out. There is an opening on the tensioner for a 3/8" ratchet. Turning it clockwise with a little muscle releases the tension.
