Its hard not to like the PSD. Mine has 13K with NO trouble whatsoever. I pull a 6 to 9K pound trailer about 65% of the time with no trouble at all. Granted it likes the fuel but I can do or move anything I desire. Only time it has been back to the dealer is for oil change. Thanks FORD.
Mike, IMO most of the "problems" with the early 6.0's were related to two issues: Computer program (flash) issues and zero tech training (not slamming the techs). I bought my my 6.0 in Feb 03 and now have 60,400 miles. The first 4,000 miles were problematic...The last 56,000 have been the best vehicle I've ever owned. In fact, I know about twenty 6.0 owners and they all have one thing in common: The 6.0 Grin
Well, I've heard lots of weird things about the real early 2003 ones, but there are many 03s that worked out fine.
My 2004 PSD has run for 22,000 miles without anything serious. I had to clean a turbo hose and tighten the clamps once. I had a finicky idle once, but that went away once I learned that I wasn't changing the oil properly.
Otherwise, it's just been oil and diesel fuel. I have no serious complaints.
I've got the 03/03 build 6 liter. Bought it used with 22k miles. Always runs great. From what I imagine, the amount of complaints you read on these websites are probably equal to about 0.1% of all 6 liters out there (obviously, not a real number, most aren't on these sites--but just look at all the 6 liters on the road).
I also have about 24k troublefree miles on my 2005 PSD. I sometimes question why I bought it, but this morning when I pulled into the pumps I remembered. Regular unleaded $2.69 and diesel $2.39.
you are going to have a tough coin toss. both the 6.0 and new v10's are great ford motors. i have 11k on mine 0 trips to the dealer for motor problems and one small 5 min warrenty issue with the cruise control swich on the master cylinder leaking a little.
Ford is building one great truck with the super duty causing us all gaser and diesel owners to wear a bseg.
I'm new to anything Diesel...how were you changing the oil the wrong way and why did it affect idle ?
to much oil causes it to froth and and bubble. and since the injectors are fired by the oil this can cause a problem like romps at idle. at least this is how i understand it. ford has a TSB that says not to fill over the min on the dipstick.

Have they worked this out with the '05s? I have had 0 problems with overfilling and I fill up to the full mark on the stick (around 15 qts total 14 + 1 in filter)
Put about 20k miles on my '04 PSD and so far only had one real problem (o-ring on an injector failed, causing truck to stall in traffic,) and a few quirks. So all in all, a pretty reliable engine. My biggest problem with the engine, or I should say, my engine's biggest problem with me, is that for the last few months I've been travelling a lot and haven't been able to work it. These engines need to be driven hard with a load to keep'em happy (and soot free.) A grocery getter they are not. No matter what engine you get, the biggest determinate for being happy with it will probably be the level of service you get from the dealership's service department.

I agree- After I get home from a big pull (700-1,200 miles) my 6.0 will average 18.5 mpg the first tank of fuel, then the second will drop to 18.0 and then the next will go back to 17-17.5 and stay there (until I do another big pull).
The 6.0 likes to pull and mine definately runs more efficient after it gets worked.
Do not make the decision overly complicated. The V-10 has lots of horses, but lacks *****. Make your decision based on the truck's use. I'm a contractor and while I see many V-10s around the local lumber yards, it is not the V-10s hauling the BIG loads, i.e. enough pressure-treated for a large deck or full pallets of pavers. No offense to the gas guys, but it is tough to beat the torque of the PSD. I own an early '03 which I bought as a repurchase from Ford because of engine management probs with the original owner. Ford fixed it, it has the same warranty as if I bought it new and it runs great. Here in the N'east diesel is quite pricey (2.81 9/10 last fill-up) but I get over 13 mpg even when loaded and I am very happy with my choice. Hope this helps. Ed
