When I put my '94 Bronco in reverse and back up, after a few feet, I get a single click from what sounds like the drivers side front end. Asked my wife to try to isolate it when backing up in the drive, but she was not able to narrow it down. Only clicks once when backing up and never when going forward. Any ideas as to where to begin looking.
If you still have the auto hubs on it, I would check them out first. The prescribed method of unlocking auto hubs is to put the truck in reverse, and back up 10 or 15 feet or so.....like that.
About how far does the truck have to move from the time it is stopped to when you hear the click???
Streetgang: When backing up, I hear the click anywhere from 5 to 15 feet. It clicks only one time, and is on the drivers side. I had thought about the auto hubs, that I still have, but wasn't sure, as I have not engaged them into 4 wheel drive for some time. Perhaps I need to put it into 4 wheel drive and drive around a vacant field and then put it in reverse to see if that does anything. Open to any suggestions as they are appreciated.
WheelMA1: Just a single click, not multiple ones like a ratchet. Could the single click be the start however of the "ratcheting sound"? Appreciate the post.
Well non-use of the auto hubs can result in premature failure too. Mine only made the multiple ratchet when I dumped it into 4 in a snow bank, and heard the hub disintegrate. From there after till I replaced them, it was like I had a ratchet spinning while going down the road.
Just a thought but I have had a clicking sound like that but it turned out to be the front brake pads, the retaining clips were not put back in when I took it to PepBoys and they were floping around and it sounds just like that.
