when i stand by my truck or open up the hood there is a clicking noise,(94 f150 xlt 4x2 351 5.8 v8) a continous clicking noise, its coming from the engine itself, its not the air conditioner im not thats stupid but its an engine noise, its not the fanbelt either, all 351 are like that probably, does anybody elses click?
It could be a number of things Lifter/rocker arm, exhaust leak, timing chain, etc.Heres one way to try to isolate the noise take an old garden hose and cut to about 2 or 3 feet while the truck is running put one end up to your ear and place the other end on the motor in different places till you hear the noise.A stethascope works real good but not everybody has one.
yeah i went to midas today and the guy seems to like me because he is going to run straight pipes without the muffler with 3" echotips for only 140 that is a deal because i went to a privately owned muffler shop that is supposed to be real cheap and they wanted 180, you think my exhaust is going to sound good with the 351? mostly doing it so i dont hear that clicking noise as much
Had a clicking noise in my '65 Mustang 289 (back when the earth's crust was still warm)that drove me crazy 'cause I knew it wasn't a lifter. Turned out that the return spring on the fuel pump was gone and would not hold the lever against the eccentric.
I've heard that the injectors can make a clicking noise on these 351's. I have a slight clicking that a freind of mine diagnosed as injectors. He is way more knowledgeable about these engines, 5.0/5.8, than I am and said that they do this. My clicking is very slight and I don't really notice it most of the time.
I have a 1995 351w. The if the clicking noise is at the top of the motor than it is the injectors. If you have headers, than check for an exhaust leak.
As far as your gas problem, I replaced my mechanical fan with an electric - thermostat controlled fan, and my gas mileage has been between 18-20 mpg on the highway. Total cost for the fan conversion was $55. Got a fan out of a Bonneville for $35 and the thermostat unit was $20. Works great.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-May-02 AT 09:57 PM (EST)]Ya know I always wondered that myself. My grandpa had a 302 in a truck and it clicked, my dads 1988 F-150 w/ I-6 clicked, my dads 1991 thunderbird SC w/ 3.8L clicked and my 1996 F-150 w/ 302 clicks. Almost every Ford I have ever listened to clicks. Mine is louder when it is cold and gets quieter as it warms up. I was thinking it was the lifters. Maybe I need to check it out some more.
I think you have a rocker arm that came out of adjustment, my '77 302 does that, and I just pull off the valve covers, find which one is loose, set it at zero lash, then give it an addtional 1/2 turn. I have polylocks on my Crane Energizer roller rockers though, I'm not sure how to set the adjustment on factory pedastol-type, but check your Hanes manual, it will tell you. THe easiest way to check to see if this is what it is, is pull th oil filler cap off the valve covers when it is running, and notice the frequency of the rocker arms' motion, if the noise is on the same frequency, then that's what it is. Good luck, and as always,
