steering box leaking at bottom

my power steering box is leaking on my 79 f150 2wd at the bottom the best I can tell where the i think pitman arm is attached. I'm assuming there is probably a seal or gasket there that has gone bad. If there is how do I change it? is it something that can be done with out removing the steering box?

I don't have my diagram here with me now but I just rebuilt my box a few weeks ago and if I remember right there's a circle clip that holds the seal in place. I THINK you can pull the pitman arm, pull the clip and pry out the seal. Napa will sell a sector shaft seal replacement that can be put in. I don't believe it's necessary to remove the box to do this but it might be easier, all depending on how hard it is to get that seal out.

that is the same spot mine is leaking, but AI have been driving without power steering for a few months now and I am getting used to it. I don't need to goto the gym for the arms or shoulders anymore. Let us know how easy it is to change. I want to convert to manual steering but if this is easy enough, I may just do this until I find a manual box.

don't drive a PS equiped 2wd 73-79 very long without the PS working.

The rag-joint isn't designed to take the stress and it costs allmost 1/2 of what a new steering box costs.

There is a bushing on top of the seal. If it wears it will cause the seal to go out as fast as you can replace it. I don't remember if you can replace the bushing on the vehicle or not.

i've been looking at this, and think I may just replace the box. It does have some play in it now that might be why the seal is leaking. Looks like four bolts and its off the frame. How do I seperate the steering shaft from it?

Have the day off today so I pulled the gear box out and replaced it. It was a pretty straight forward job only special tool would be a two jaw puller for the pitman arm. I finally figured out how to get the shaft off. One must remove the pinch bolt the entire way not just loosen it.

Had to pull the gear box out the topside cause my headers were in the way of letting it drop out the bottom. That sucker is heavy!

Now I think I am going to try to pull the dash out of the truck to prep it and the cab for paint.

The lower seal is easy to replace, pull the pitman arm and snap ring. Put a drain pan under the box and start the engine and just turn it back and forth until you hear the seal and spacer hit the pan. Shut the engine off immediately to keep from running your pump without fluid. Install the new seal, spacer and snap ring. Replace pitman arm and fill with fluid. Most parts houses stock the lower seal kit, very common on Ford's.

When replacing any PS system component always install a return line filter on the PS pump. Use the following return line filter, not some filter inserted in the line:

Wix transmission/PS filter
===================
Wix transmission/PS filter #58964
Ford equivalent filter kit #XC3Z-7B155-AA
Ford filter alone #XC3P-7B155-BA
200 psi working, pressure relieved, magnetic
change yearly or 12000 miles

I went to the local parts store and asked about a lower seal. The guy looked at me funny and asked for more info. I told him where it was and he pulled up a picture that looked like it would work, but it said it was for a 4wd. Would a 2wd steering box be the same as a 4wd box? I have a feeling they are the same and this part would fit, but I want to ask the gods at FTE first before wasting the $11.00 for a new seal.
