Question Leaking Steering Box

My boss has and Excursion with 90k on it and the steering box just started leaking (about 1qrt a day)... It is right at the bottom around the splined shaft... Can this be repaired without pulling the box? Any instructions on how to do it? I got a new seal kit from ford today.

Thanks

Yes, and no. In theory it is possible to do it without pulling the box; however, I can say from a good bit of experience that it is much easier to do the whole job if you just pull the box. You can reach through the fender to undo all the lines and the steering shaft, and remove the 3 bolts holding it in. All that you have to do is pop the drag link off the pitman arm(do this first of everything) and drop it out the bottom. Once on the floor, you can stand squarely over the top of it and use a good old fashioned 2 jaw puller to remove the pitman arm. After trying several times without a lot of luck to do it on the vehicle, I found that I can drop a box, swap a pitman, and stab the box back in, in less than an hour, all with less stress. Doing the seal will take a bit longer, but in my opinion if you can do it while standing over it and not looking up at it while it drips on your head you will have a much more pleasant experiance.

Is there a description somewhere on the process of tearing down the box and putting it back together?
