My 1996 Ford E-150 started with a squeak inside the steering column, today something crunched and now I have play in the steering wheel ( up, down, side to side ) and the steering wheel binds when I turn.
Anybody know what it is? How do I disconnect the airbag to remove the steering wheel??<O</O

I've never heard of there being "play" in the steering wheel if it's the clock spring....but I don't know much!!! (mine just made a lot of noise).
To disconnect air bag, disconnect battery. Let it sit for 20min., then remove bag with deep well socket (4 nuts). You'll be able to see what's goin on in there at least. Like "Super crew" said, is your air bag light flashing? Clock spring costs $90.00 at Ford. About 1hr to r/r.
I wouldn't call it play either, but I've had broken clocksprings at the plant in cases where it was necessary to put the steering wheel on and have it repaired later. In those cases, if it really come undone, you could feel it bind a little in places and then come free creating a possible "play in the wheel" feeling.
can you explain or discribe the clock spring
I just purchased a 1996 e-250 that has the same problem
pulled the wheel and then the large plastic circle with the wire loop inside
under this is a snap ring over a small but stout spring
this spring was bound on the lower end where it looks like a bearing should be
this is where the shaft is loose and moves freely when it should not
can anyone tell me where to find a good picture or break down of a late model steering column
ser, i pulled mine down and found what ford parts calls the lower bearing shot
the upper bearing which is lower on the shaft on mine is ok
the lower bearing I replaced but still have play, up and down and side to side
mine is still missing parts on or around the shaft
The clockspring is the assembly with the the ribbon wound inside it. Like Blkbstr said it's doubtful a bad clockspring (even one that's really come apart) is going to produce movement of the wheel in all directions. I don't know anything about the bearings you're speaking of. Maybe post a picture of yours and someone may see something.
I've already put it back together with a new bearing under the clock spring
unable to determine where the short heavy spring and snap ring that was in there goes
with a new bearing i still have some play in the wheel, about half as much as before
I am still missing something between the steering shaft and the bearing
