the noise of the timing gears is kinda a howling noise, hard to describe, im not sure if there both steel i will find out this weekend.

My '83 300 has the stock steel gear set and I never noticed and particular noise from them. As far as getting the old fiber gear off; a bearing splitter is your best bet with the cam in the block... but you might warp or crack the cam retainer plate in the process since it's the only thing holding the cam in. I actually broke my gear puller and ruined another's bolt set trying the get the steel cam gear off in place. Finally pulled the cam and pressed it off in a hydraulic press [rigged pipe bender].

The crank gear will be easier to remove as it's not a hard press fit, but lacking puller holes you'll have to use a bearing splitter here too.

i cut the thing off with a cut wheel on the grinder, but then again the only thing i wanted to save was the plate and the spacer washer, i was trashing the cam.
