I have a 1981 F150 ranger XLT. she has the 5.0L 302, AOD Trans, the 9in rear. When I first got her the motor was losing compresion and the trans was ok and the truck would not go faster than 85mph. i thought it was something in the trans but I have rebuilt the trans and motor and it will not go faster than 85mph. can any one tell me is there a speed limmiter or what might be cuasing this.
Yeah the speedos have an actual stop in there, its also keep the speedo/odometer from turning backwards, a pair of wire cutters will fix it no problem, but i wouldn;t know that .
I know in the vans the speedo will wrap back around. It runs in my mind that on the trucks there is a peg at the 85mph mark. It's there so you don't damage the speedo.
I have a speedo out of a nother truck and there is no stop at 85 the stop is to keep it from going backwards. me and a buddy whent riding in my truck and then in his pony and he took the pony to 110mph. my truck didn't feel like it was going as fast as the pony even when it was at 90 and 95
Why would you even need to go that fast.
Tires aren't likely speed rated. Good way to kill yourself and possibly others...
I have to agree..
and furthermore, I'm sure you have replaced all of the bushings and Suspension components on that truck and not trying to fly down the road at 85 plus on a 24 year old truck with the original (very tired) suspension right????
Any way there is not any type of limiter in the truck also what engine do you have in the truck so older stright sixes stop making power at like 3500 rpm you could be winding the engine at its max speed to the point of valve float.
What are your rpms at 85? Do you know your rear gear ratio? Tire size? Maybe your cats are clogged, and your truck can't breathe at higher rpms. Does your engine start choking out ro does it seem to still be pulling when you get to 85? Hard to say with what little info we have in front of us.
I think some people have hit it on the head your gear ratio could have alot to do with it as well as your tire size that aod trans with a rebuilt 302 (even stock) should hit at least a little over the 85mph mark another thing is your third gear pushing it to 85 or is it your overdrive once in a while if im already at 85 and it kicks into OD it wont accelerate anymore
