tranny trouble!!
my mom drives an 89 aerostar rwd. about a week ago the tranny started acting funny. the van works fine in drive, but has no reverse. i would provide more symptoms, but i have not driven it. any suggestions?

Common problem is that the modulator goes out. I would check to see if there is fluid in the vacuum line.
I would also check the condition of the fluid. Does it look brown/black and smell burnt?

³ Fluid
³ ù Improper level ³ ù Adjust to proper level.
³ Shift Linkages (Internal/External)
³ ù Transmission shift cable and bracket ³ ù Inspect for damage. Readjust as required. Service all damaged
³ damaged or misadjusted. TR sensor out ³ components. After servicing linkages, readjust TR sensor.³ of adjustment
³ Improper Pressures
³ ù Improper band/clutch application ³ ù Check line pressure at tap. Perform line pressure and stall ³ pressures, line pressure low ³ speed tests. Refer to pressure chart No. 401 for specifications. If pressure is low, check the following ³ ³ possible components: reverse clutch.
³ Filter and Seal Assembly³ ù Filter damaged, plugged; seal damaged, ³ ù Inspect for damage and replace.cut or missing ³ Main Control Assembly³ ù Screw out of torque specification ³ ù Tighten to specification. ³ ù Gasket damaged, off location ³ ù Inspect and replace gasket.³ ù Separator plate damaged ³ ù Inspect for damage. Service as required.³ ù 1-2 shift valve (203), 2-3 shift valve ³ ù Inspect for damage. If damaged, replace main control. If parts (204), reverse modulator valve (205), ³ are missing, replace missing parts or main control. spring damaged, missing, misassembled, ³ misassembled, reassemble properly. Adjusting the transmission shift cable linkage and the TR (transmission range sensor), recommend an experienced mechanic.
