What is the difference beween a 351C,W,&M. Or better yet, how would you beambel to tell the difference between the three by looking at them??
One more, was there any special badging for the F250 HiBoy ??
Thanks in advance,
DG808, proud new owner of a 77 F250 4x4
The 351W has 6 valve cover bolts, the 351M has 8, and the chances of having a Cleveland in a truck is nil unless it was put in by someone.
The 351C was never factory installed in a truck. Any truck between 74 and 79 most likely has a 351M in it.
I have had my 79 f-100 for 18 years. I like my 351m.My truck has 180k on it.It had 123k on it before I rebuilt it.268 comp cam, headers, delta flows,Holly 1850[600cfm],325gear runs15.90-16.10 . over the years, the best thing I did was put the smaller carb on it. I only wish I had of put flat top pistons in it.The smaller carb helped the bottom end abunch.
First, the post about how to tell the difference between the 351c/w/m is correct.
Second the post about trucks only having the 351M from 72-79 is incorret. Ford installed all these: 300-6, 302, 351M, 360, 390, 400M, 429, and 460 in their trucks during that time frame.
Third you cannot tell an 351M from a 400M from the outside of the engine unless you are sure the emissions sticker on the valve cover has not be removed and replace. The only way to be sure if is a 351or 400M is to remove the oil pan and look for the casting number on the crankshaft throw. Even better is to just measure the storke. The 351M has a 3.5" stroke, while the 400M has a 4.0" stroke.

I other thing I noticed is Wayne refering to the 400 as an 400M .
The 351 is the only engine that gets the "M" designation.
The 400 doesn't and shouldn't.
They are both "335 series" engines with the 351 Cleveland included.
I have Numerous Ford printed Books and there is NO reference to a 400M,only a 400 in the 335 series engines.
It could be very confusing to many who come along,to use the M after 400.
We have enough confusion about fords engines already.
you are right about the literature not mentioning the 400M but since there are both styles it makes sense to refer to them as C or M if it applies (like someone asking the difference). i have been accumulating 400C for years and now have 3 of them (i guess that must be 50% of what ford made!) and you have to beat people over the head to make them realize it is a different engine. hawkrod
I think that what rc351W meant was that, if it was a 351, it would be an M as opposed to a C or W. Not that Ford only put 351M engines in those year trucks.
Mil1ion is right. The 400 (335series) engine does not carry the M.
designation.
I never heard of a 400C, but if they are that rare, I don't wonder why.
