i have a 79 f-150 supercab with a ford 9 inch and i am needing to pull an axle to figure what spling it is i have unbolted the flange plate and the brakes are still on do i need to take them off but the axle is still stuck in the third member is there anything else i need to take off or do i just start tugging and hitting it with a hammer
I belive there is a clip inside the rear housing holding the axle in the carrier. You may have to pull the cover and remove the clip to pull the axle. I wouldn't hit it with a hammer too much. You may end up bending something that you would regret later. But I may be wrong because of my lack of experience in with a 9". But that would be something to check.
The 9" has no plate or c-clips. The axles are bolted in.
It should pull out. They do get stuck over the years. You can try hitting the center of the axle (don't hit the lip or your wheel may not want to go over the hub). You can also take a screwdriver and gently pry the retaining plate away from the backing plate. This may help get it out.
you may want to look into renting a slide hammer for pulling axles they have a flange that bolts on to your axle and gives a straight pull on the axle you'll be amazed at how eaqsy they can make your life
Yes, remove the brake hard ware and brake shoes. Be very carefull not to damage the axle seals when removing the axle. You can rent a slide hammer at Autozone or at a rent-a-center to remove the axle.
a slide hammer with a few taps and it is out... it isn't really a press fit, but the bearing is in there pretty snug to prevent leaks and movement, so anything less of a slide hammer is a PITA...
I don't believe you have to remove any of the brake stuff. Turn your drum around back wards put it on with a couple of loose lug nuts and use it as a slide hammer.
you are right, the brake stuff can stay. i have done it with a brake drum too, but one side was so stuck i had to break down and get a hammer to do it.
pull the axle, get the seal out, put the new one in, preferably with a driver, ( I use one intended for bearing races, I just turn it around so the flat side is toward the seal), put axle back in, tap it in, bolt the keeper down, put the drum back on.
oops, forgot that detail... absolutely right, and while you have it apart, be a good idea to put on a new bearing, save the trouble of dealing with it again later.
