In place of a slide hammer or risking damage to the brake drum try this. Get about three feet of 3/8" chain and wrap it around the inside of the axle flange and use a clevis to connect the ends together. Get a large wrench like an adjustable wrench or something else like it (item that weighs a few pounds) and attach it to the other end of the chain with another clevis and just work this sort of like you would a slide hammer. The sudden jerking of the chain tight with the weight of the wrench on the end will jar the axle loose. Use a bit of reservation with the amount of force you use and work it loose. In other words don't try and get the axle out with the first attempt or the axle may just fly out and hurt you. Be careful.

This technique has been used successfully to remove things like this for more years than automobiles have been around.
