Tires Cupping Or Scalloping

Noticed all 4 tires on my 2004 6.0 CC 4x4 are cupping or some call scalloping. The truck has just over 12,000miles on it and the tires have not been rotated. Running recommended air pressures as spec. on inside drivers door tag. Any ideas why? This truck has not seen any off road conditions or anything else that would affect the alignment.

Okay, I'll bite. I thought cupping was essentially due to weak shock absorbers permitting the tire to bounce. How does rotating the tires help? Do they get out of balance maybe outboard or inboard. Even if they did why would this cause cupping as opposed to tread wear?

Can any expert tire readers help?

I'd start by getting them balanced and road force variation measured by a good tire shop. I had this problem with my MTR's and that's what it turned out to be. Also have them check the rims for being out of round or excessive runout. You may want to get the tires checked for being out of round as well. I doubt this being stock tires though.

My second course of action would be to get an alignment, if necessary. Just because you haven't beaten on it, doesn't mean it was perfect from the factory. Also have them check all the steering, suspension, and driveline components. I would have the dealership do this in case their is something that can be warrantied.

Lastly, would be the shocks. The above conditions would render even the best shocks useless.

Hope that helps a little.

I purchased a 2003 F250 CC 4x4 PSD with 21K miles on it...
The fronts had the same wear....really odd cupping /feathering....pulled to the right as well...pretty unpleasant....
Took it to a tire shop and the owner took one look at the tires and said lack of rotation ie,never been... He said these trucks need their tires rotated min...5K miles....
They rotated them and all better.....no pull...tracks straight.....

The all 4 part is pretty unusual though

Chris..

All four tires, jorzac? Are they cupping with the same pattern or are the rears wearing different? Could be bad factory tires...

But, rotation is the best medicine, regardless.

Big Orn---Yes all 4 tires are cupping with similar wear patterns. However, the fronts may be just a little worse. The reason I did not rotate them was I noticed some abnormal wear on the fronts at about 6000 to 7000 miles. I figured I could isolate the cause this way.
