If you could design any engine, either by ressurecting an old one and updating it, or by coming up with something new altogether-what would it be? This would be an engine to power light-medium duty pickups and/or SUV's.
Mine would be a ressurection of sorts. The 300 inline six, punched out a little bit. Maybe a 315 or something. 10.5:1 compression. Overhead cam, large valves. A torque based engine that could get up and move with today's v-8 engines.
My all time favorite engine is the Offenhauser (Miller). Before rules took it out of racing, this little (less than 300 inches) 4-banger would run wide open all day long and kick out as much as 1200 HP.

well, it would be something that would run on water. not hydrogen powered, something that actually burned water like gasoline. yeah, i know, my wife is still trying to find a funny farm that will take me.
Id make an 8.1L V12. It would be similar to the Triton 6.8L V10 but would have 2 more cylinders.
Give it DOHC and variable cam timing with 5 valves per cylinder and Id be set.
Im thinking it would probably put out over 400 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque at 2200 rpm.

This would be new altogether, how about diesel/electric. A motor at each wheel which would be true four wheel drive. Additions could be dynamic vehicle control which would be of benefit in an emergency manuver. Different windings like a locomotive for the deep down torque or running at speed at just above an idle using far less fuel. You would also have the side benefit of 120V electricity for power tools, lights, light welding, etc. As fuels become more expensive the realizm of diesel/electric is apparent. I think it will also be expensive.
A a boss 429, though i've never had or driven one.. so it could end up being a big never meet your hero's moment. But i love the regular non super version 429 i have in my truck, it woudl be neat to have the super rare variant.
B The BMW big six from the 70's to the early 90's. I've had a couple and i love them to death (or cracked head as it were). I have a mid 80's version in a 73 bavaria right now and it's just a seatheart of an engine, but my dream version is the european early 90's m5 s88 variant.

The part I'd resurrect isn't even an engine, but just a part of one. I miss carburetors! Boo computers!
If I had to pick one engine, though, it would be the Buick 455. These things were monsters. Gross measurement of 510lb-ft of torque @ 2800 rpm. 'Nuff said?
For a light duty pickup, like an F150, I'd take the 6.0l PSD, lop two cylenders off, and tune it for good torque and fuel economy. These motors will last forever, get great gas mileage, tow anything, and make a great alternative to big gas engines.
The big V12 is a good idea, but I'd hate to see how much gas it'd burn!
Anybody ever heard of the "Quasi-Turbine" engine? That seems like it would have some serious potential. I first learned about it here on FTE. http://quasiturbine.promci.qc.ca/
