I am going to post this question here as well in the bodywork section
the doors on my 76' have those nasty bubbled out rust spots on them, and I am wondering what the best way to get rid of them is. I have tried to sand them, but it hasn't worked to well...and it takes a long time.
I was thinking of spraying over them with a filler primer with many coats, sanding them in between.
the only way i know to do it right, is to spot blast them, give them a light coat of fill, sand, spoting putty, sand, filler primer, sand, spot putty again if needed, then continue priming/sanding, till it's smooth to the touch...
yeah, i would say the best way to take car of that rust problem is probably to cover the truck in lighter fluid... and give her the torch. just kidding... actually, i would probably buy some burger king food and sit down and watch dumb and dummer
Check your local tool rental place, or borrow a sand blaster. Your gonna have to get all the rust blasted away or it will come back, so blast away a couple inces past the bad spot. next you'll need to fill in this new low spot with a filler, everybody has there own preferences. Then a high quality primer and paint(nothing out of a can). Be careful when blasting, your metal might be thinner than you think....
If you can get to the area from the inside of the door, clean the area (blast or brush) of all loose scale and neutralize it with one of the phosphoric acid rust neutralizers. Lay fiberglass mat on the inside and completely cover the rusted/neutralized area. This will give you a good base to lay the filler on.
