Ok, here is my problem. I put a Ford 360 in my jeep. It needed a bit more pep. Anyway, there are two wires coming off the alternator regulator and i need to know where one goes.
I A S F
( regulator)
I know that the bat terminal on the alternator meets up with the A on the regulator then goes to the main line to the fuse box and the battery. But, the wire coming off of the I on the regulator i don't where it goes any help??? It is referred to as the exciter...???

The above set-up does not use the "I" terminal. The "I" terminal is used if you want to have an idiot light in the dash. The wiring is a little different and you need to add a resistor. The above will work fine and if you want to monitor the alternator, you can use a ammeter or a voltage guage.
This is the shortcut that has the wiring diagram in question. I do not have an electric choke on my 2bbl carb. Will things work if i just omit the "I" wire and follow the diagram on the above link??
Sorry, here is the correct link:

I thought the S on the regulator hooks to the Stator on the alternator?? You said it goes to the ignition switch. Is it the ignition key position it gets hooked up to?? Before or after the fuse? Not trying to be stupid, i just want to make sure it is right before damaging anything. Hopefully keyturning on the rebuilt engine/tranny/carb and new coil/ignition module/alternator regulator will be very soon!!

You can hook it up that way. That is the diagram that uses an idiot light. You need to hook an ungrounded light bulb with a 500 ohm resistor in parallel with the light to terminal 914 in their diagram. One side of the light/resistor will hook to 914, the other side will hook to the ignition switch where it will be hot in run. The bulb will light when the key is turned, but the alt is not turning. The light will go out once the alt starts charging. Ford wired them two different ways. The way I showed you is standard for a truck with a factory ammeter and no idiot light.
Yeah, i realize that having a dummy light is way too much work, plus a little more expense. I don't want the light. OK, i want to go over it one more time. Back to your first diagram; the F on the alternator goes to the F on the Regulator, check. The A meets up with the Bat and goes into the main hot line, check. Now, if i don't use the S(no electric choke) on the alternator, do i just omit it?? Also, the S on the regulator, you said it goes to the keyed ignition wire, right?..what gauge wire should i run? Also, what would happen if i connected the S on the alternator to the S on the regulator and didn't run the S on the regulator to the ignition?? I will be using an aftermarket gauge to check the output voltage, where will that hook in??
The stupidest question is left unasked....THANKS again.

"S" on the alternator goes to "S" on the regulator. 14 gauge should be good, white if you have a choice. The factory "S" (stator) wire runs into the harness to power the electric choke if you have one. You don't have one so that part can be eliminated but you still need the link between the alternator and regulator.
Hook up the voltmeter just about anywhere that's hot with the key on. They don't draw much but why create a drain if you don't have to.
Good luck,

Wire it up just like the first diagram shows. DO NOT hook the stator on the alternator to the s on the regulator. This diagram represents the wiring FORD uses on their trucks with an ammeter. It is straight from the factory manual. Smaller wire is ok for all connections except the bat terminal on the alt. This should be at least 10 guage heavy wire. Hook your voltmeter at a convenient location under the dash that has 12v when the key is on.
hi franklin2 you have been a help to me so far even if it's not runing yet i'm learning more all the time so......this i kkati have replaced the icm still no sparknext i took off the e coil and put it on my friends f-150 it started right up coil ...ok. battery fully charged silnoid ok now that leaves the voltage reg. or wiring... how would i test V R?? thanks again 84 f-150 in line6 2wd electronic ignition feed back carb
