ok, on my alternator i have 5 places to put wires.... 1 ground, 2 battery, 3 FLD, 4 STA, 5 (not labbled anything).. what wires need to go where? on my voltage regulator i have battery, arm, and FLD... obviously a ground wire goes to the ground, the battery wire goes to the battery, the fld goes to the fld, but where does the ARM go, and what goes on the one not labbled and the STA?? i know when i convert over i get rid of the voltage regulator, when i do this do i need to keep the capacitor that is on my regulator?
I dont think you need every wire on the alternator hooked up. When I rewired mine I used a Ron Francis wiring kit and only used two wires to hookup the alternator (one to starter solenoid and one to regulator) all the other places where you can connect wires to were just ignored.
this is a alternator i got off rock auto, for those who have used or gotten one of them, also lui im not using a wiring kit, im just going by the wires i already have there. how much was that wiring kit though?
My alternator is called a first generation or something like that and had a bunch of wires attached to it originally when I got it. I decided to tear up the whole electrical wiring on the truck since it had so many years of splices and riggin on it and I didnt want to add to the chaos. So I went in and took out everything that resembled or smelled like a wire. There was not one wire left on the truck when I got done.
Called Ron Francis told them the information they wanted and they set up a whole kit for me. I think I paid about two hundred somethin for the kit which comes with a new panel and light switch. Let me say it was the easiest wiring job I have done. You have to read the instructions first and go thru each bag in alphabetical order and by the third bag the truck is already runnin.
the regulator now sits inside the cab and one wire goes to the alternator from it.
All the wires are marked with there purpose like horn, lights etc.
Oh and there tech support is great too. Im now switching from points and condensor to a complete MSD electronic system and called them to ask what I had to do and they told me exactly what to do.
Lui
Well the batt goes to the battery. Field comes from ignition on. Ground is ground to any where. The start goes where? Start on solenoid maybe? It has a built in regulator, It just isn't self exciting like a one wire is. Hence the field to excite it. What's this going into. most fords that use an internal regulator are already wired for this Alt.
The copassitor or condenser is just used for Raidio noise suppression.

a 64 ford f100, the thing is, it has a generator with 3 wires... those wires go to the voltage regulator... but im putting this alternator in with the 5 post... so i gotta figure which wires go where
The alt in the pic is has a built in regulator from what I can see.
On the mid 1980's and later Motorcraft alternators, the regulator is a half moon shaped black plastic piece that bolts to this area of the alternator...I don't see one in his picture.
My bad Bill yer right as always. But he needs to upgrade to a late model reg and get the harness. Right? The one wire is so much easier. I got two 100 amp ons for the boat. one Delco that is on and one Ford for backup or for sale.
My suggestion: The 1965/68 Mustangs used the same 40/45/55 amp alternators as the trucks did. The alternator harness from the Mustang has been reproduced This will give him the correct electrical plugs ins on the alternator. He will then have to splice the wires to his present loom.
Mustang looms for 1965/68 have all been reproduced. So, the headlamp loom, and engine gauge feed loom will also work on F Series trucks.
Mustangs use the same seal beams, parklight sockets, horns, horn relay, alternator, alternator regulator, starter solenoid, temp and oil senders, yadda yadda yadda as the trucks do.
>>> E2PZ-10316-A .. Alternator Regulator (Motorcraft GR-540-A)..replaces >> C3SZ-10316-A & D4TZ-10316-A ~ Fits EVERYTHING = 1965 thru the 1980's. (1963 and later on T-Birds)
