I have a 1992 Ranger, 219k miles, still working well. I would like to keep it on the road a while longer while saving for another Ranger.
Both side mirrors flop inward at speeds over 50 mph. Naturally, there is no tensioning screw adjustment as there was on my father's Oldsmobiles.
My questions are:
Does anyone have a clever way to fix these mirrors?
If not, I can find replacements, but that raises another question. If I unscrew the mirrors from the doors, will whatever the screws screw into behind the door panel stay in place, or does it fall away necessitating door disassembly?
I know that these are lame questions, but there is a great deal of useful knowledge in this forum, and maybe someone knows.
You can unscrew the bolts that hold the mirror on without the inside nut falling to the inside. I tried mirrors from j c whitney but they wounld not match the hole pattern so you may have to go to the dealer . Keep us updated
I had the same issue with 90 paddle style mirrors. Got one at the dealer. Too much $$$. Pass side started doing same thing. Got one from eBay. You can get a pair, new for less than one from the dealer. Mine is fine, and no complaints. Just save the original screws, as the new one (eBay) came with sheet metal screws, I believe.
Oh- the screws go into captive-nuts in the doors.

on my 94 you pull the bottom plate off and there is a tork bolt up there. I found that the mirror housing wears and nothing in reality can be done to tighten them. I got some of that 2 part plastic mender and gooped them both up and they are staying in place. do it on a weekend when you dont plan to drive, 24 hrs to fully cure. if ya get neat you can then paint the mess as it will turn yellow on ya.
Your neighborhood automotive store should stock "OE Style" direct replacement mirrors. They are an almost exact replica, except that they do have tensioner nuts! I'm pretty sure they go for about $12 each (make sure you get 1 left and 1 right - they are different).
