I bought my truck used so I have no idea how well the previous owner took care of it and kept up on maintenance. I think he changed the oil on a regular basis...but I don't think he touched the rest of the fluid in the truck too often. I already flushed the cooling system.
I had always noticed some interesting shift habbits, like it was going into half a gear, it wasn't a very smooth shift, and other things. So I decided to tackle a tranny fluid and filter change myself. Damn...it sure is handy to have a drainplug on the tranny pan, plus a reusable gasket. Fluid was a pretty crappy color, and quite a bit of particle "dust" stuck to the magnet. So, changed everything out, put it all back together...what a difference! I can't even feel it shift anymore! I just hear the engine noise change and I see the tach drop, but I keep accelerating without even the slightest jerk. If anyone is suffering from poor shifting, I highly recommend a fluid and filter change to start off with.
did the same thing to my NEW 2001 CREW 3 weeks ago. Dont forget to change the front and rear axle oil also. Front holds about 2 quarts of regular 90 wt, rear needs synthetic and limiti slip addative. 4 wheel transmfer case takes a couple quarts of MERCON.--- as long as your changeing oil--- do it all and feel comfortable for the next 100,000 miles.
