Well, I just bought the '89, and have very few service records from the last owner(s). I want to add a B&M shift kit (stage 1,) and an increased capacity pan and/or cooler. Here's my question: Although I do not know for sure if the trans fluid/filter have ever been changed, I assume it has, because (1) it's not leaking, even seepage around the bolt holes, and (2) there's blue RTV around the gasket. So, looks like it's been serviced, just not sure when. Old owner didn't know either. Fluid looks & smells good. It shifts just fine with 109K on it, but not knowing the actual history of it, would you guys:
1: go ahead and change the trans, cooler, and t/c fluid, install the shift kit & filter and replace w/ all new atf....
2: don't take any chances and just change what's in the pan every 10K or so from here on out...
Change the fluid and filter. Which is all going to happen when you put the shift kit in. Keep in mind the word "shift kit" is a trademark of Transgo. They do it right. All the others are for high schoolers!
