ABS light flashing

Great site by the way! My ABS light just started flashing a couple of days ago. I've read in this forum that my problem may be a dirty or bad speed sensor. I checked the #13 fuse (not sure what that is for because I don't have owners manual) and it was blown. When I replaced it my truck almost caught on fire. It's a '97 F-150 supercab 4x4 4.6L V-8. How is that connected to my problem and should i be weary of replacing it after I replace the sensor? Also I read here that the problem may be connected to the cruise control. My cruise has been out for about 6 months and I haven't done anything about it yet. Thanks to anyone for helping me.

I had the same problem with mine. I would replace the fuse, hit the brakes twice, then the fuse would blow. Turned out the wiring I rigged up for the cap had worn through the plastic and was rubbing the wires together, shorting them out when I hit the brakes. When the fuse is blown, you don't have brake lights either. Your turn signals will still work though.

Fuse 13 is a 15 A for rear anti-lock brake system Module, brake on/off switch, brake pressure switch.

The flashing may be a diaognotic trouble code. If it is, the light will flash anywhere from 2 to 13 times, pause, then repeat. If it flashes 16 times then repeats, there is no code stored in the antilock module. Let us know if it is a code. If it is not (just keeps flashing) it could be any of the following:

Yellow ABS Warning Indicator Self-Checks OK, but Automatically Begins Flashing
  • Intermittent anti-lock electronic control module.
  • Intermittent anti-lock electronic control module ground circuit 530 (LG/Y).
  • Intermittent yellow ABS warning indicator circuit.
  • Keep alive memory (KAM) fuse 13.
There are proceedures for testing all of these things...not sure how mechanically inclined you are or if youhave a multimeter...

The light flashes 16 times, holds for a second, then repeats. I also noticed that on the master cylinder there is a wire that leads to what looks like some sort of cap or plug that may have started to melt a bit. At least that's what it looks like. Unfortunately I don't have a multimeter or any repair books. I have done my fair share of tinkering on cars and have some common sense, but am definately no genius when it comes down to it. Do you think I should bother replacing that speed sensor. I should also mention that i had the oil in both difs changed at jiffy lube a few weeks prior to all this happening.

Jiffy, huh? Yikes
If it cycles 16 times, the manual says there is no info stored in the antilock brake membory. The wire that is melted sounds like it is the wire that runs from the cruise control shut off on the brake pedal. Check this out: F150 fires...help!!!.
If the cruise is out, I'd probably unplug the melted wire and see if the abs light stops blinking (you might need the codes cleared for it to stop...not sure)...might want to wait for a post from someone who is for sure that is what the wire is

So I went ahead and disconnected the wire, which IS the break pressure switch for the cruise and then put the #13 fuse back in and crossed my fingers. Yay, no fire and my brake lights started working again. (Didn't notice they were out til last night). The ABS light was still flashing so I disconnected the battery and hooked it back up. No more flashing. So now all I have to do is call up Ford and see what they will do for me. Thank you so much for all your help. I really appreciate it and I can take back the speed sensor and get my $21.99 back.

Sweet! glad we could help. There are other threads out there where people have purchased different cruise switches since Ford wouldn't help. Try searching.
Let us know how it turns out!

Return the speed sensor and pick up the cruise disconnect switch (new style). Prices are pretty close to even.

I also experience the same problem but I don't have the time to bring it to the mechanic. Is it still safe to run it or do I really need it to bring it to the shop immediately?

If you are having the exact same problem then you should do what I said I did above. Disconnect the battery and that switch on the master cylinder, then replace that #13 fuse, and hook your battery back up. Contact Ford to see if they'll replace your switch. If not then I hear that buying a new one doesn't cost much. You can safely run your vehicle (I believe) without replacing the switch. You just won't have cruise control. Good luck!

So I went to Ford to buy the new cruise deactivation switch, and sure enough it was only $17.79. Supposed to be improved and comes with adapter plugs for the wiring. Super easy install. It took me about 1 min. You just have to unplug the old one and unscrew it with a wrench (I used channel locks), and screw the new one it, plug it in and your done. Now everthing is back to normal and everything works fine. Thanks everyone for your help!!

I already brought my truck to the mechanic. Their suspicion was correct, the rear ABS sensor conked out. It only cost me about US$14
