Cool Truck Caught on Fire

Just a little FYI. My truck caught on fire in my driveway after being parked for 12+ hours. There has been a few news stories about 2000 F150s (search Ford Truck Fires) igniting due to a defective cruise control deactivation switch. If you are having cruise control problems you might want to get it checked. Luckily i backed into the driveway or my house would have went up. Total my wifes explorer next to it too.

here are a few more details about the F-150 fires

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...2004Nov23.html

"The inquiry involves 644,000 vehicles from the 2000 model year and comes after 36 reports of engine fires that may be related to a cruise-control deactivation switch, NHTSA said on its Web site. The fires occurred while the vehicles were parked and the engine was off, with no accidents or injuries reported, the agency said. "

So are you going to get a new truck out of the deal? Or have you talked to Ford yet I remember the early 90's had problems with the ignition switch or something of the sort and Ford backed them with a new vehicle I think.

actually, the cruise control had quit working in the last few weeks. it has not been definitely linked to the cruise control but i find it strange that it went out and then it caught fire and then i read the artilce.

a lawyer thinks nothing will come out of it, but i may call them anyway. i imagine if it continues to happen to others some sort of class action may occur

Is this problem at all related in other model years? I have a 97 F150 and sometimes with the cruise set it doesn't want to turn off when you tap on the brake. It will however, deactivate when you turn it off using the switch on the steering wheel.

The light in the dash just went out thats says the cc is on. The cc stills works but the light is out. Im guessing it just burned out but should i worry bout it. Was yours doing anything like that or was it just not deactivating. I really dont feel like pulling the dash apart again. When i bought it there were 3 out of the 5 dash lights out, went ahead nad replaced all 5. Thats why im wondrin if the light for the cc is actually burned out or not because i reaplaced the lights in september.

The insurance inspector engineer called me today and said he cannot make an exact determination of what caused it. He was actually perplexed. As far as cruise control goes, it would not engage. I would turn it on and push set and it would do nothing. I just found it odd with the cruise going out, the truck catching fire, and the very recent articles on the net. Who knows.

This is crazy. If it is the cruise control how does it start a fire with the engine not running? Heat?

I'm sorry Explorer97, that sucks. Keep us updated. How many miles were on your truck? I'm sorry that has happend around this time of the year.

MinD Too

My truck tried to catch fire. I was lucky enough to find it before the fire started. I keep my truck in the garage and one morning I got ready for work went to the garage and opened the door to find the garage full of smoke. The truck had been off all night and the key was not in it. After the smoke cleared and I calmed down I found the fuse to the cruise control blown. When I replaced the fuse the deactivation switch began smoking and blew the second fuse. A new switch was installed and it's been over a year now with no other trouble. My house could have went up with the truck. I was lucky.

Unhappy

What the heck, catching on fire, that is such Bull!! Your insurance will reimburse you of course, but Ford should be on top of this problem. Until the government does an investigation, nothing will come of it. Sorry it happened to you, and you are lucky nothing else went with it, thanks for the heads up,,, it's the first I've heard of it. Good luck..
