My 2004 expedtion has 18,000 miles on it and the steering wheel started shaking.I took it to the dealer and they told me I needed 4 new tires because ofcupping. I saw the tire that ihas the cupping. The front driver side tire.Do you think if I rotate the tires the cupping with fix it self. Seemscrazy to me to have to buy 4 new tires at 200 a piece when I only have18,000 miles. Has anyone else had cupping troubles?Btw the dealer was not very helpful at all!</PRE>
I have gone through some of the post on this site and found other 2004 expedition owner that have had this same trouble and their dealerships have replaced the steering rack and shaft and after many hours in service the trouble wasn't fixed. They found that if they had a road force balanced done it fixed the shaking. My concern now is that have I done damage to my steering shaft and rack? I'm very displeased with the service I got from the ford dealership. We did not buy the vehicle at this dealership but you would think pride in Ford would have given me better service I also found that this brand of tires may not be all that great, continental tires. So now it brings me back to getting 4 new tires. Which I feel should be replaced by Ford.
from what i've read of other's posts the contis are total crap and would be worth replacing even though you still have plenty of life left in them (at least the three), but you still do need to figure out where the cupping is coming from - wouldn't an alignment shop be able to figure that out?

I have an 05 EB with the Continentals and 14K total miles. At approximately 8-9K miles I started experiencing some steering wheel vibration at 75 - 80 MPH. The problem at the time didn't seem severe enough to take to the dealer. I then began to notice a whump! whump! sound intermittingly at differint speeds. Again I did not think this problem warranted a trip to the dealer. Both of these problems increased in frequency and severity where I finally had to take action. I did a thourough inspection and found that the front tires had both worn substantially on the inside edges. They will have to be replaced. I think Ford should replace these tires. I have not abused this vehicle. I have not run into anything, (curbs, etc.). No off roading. I beleive the Toe or Camber is set at the factory and it was done incorrectly.
Has anyone had this same problem and how did you approach and resolve it with dealer? Thanks!
I think something is terrible wrong with the tire ford is putting on these SUV's. I also feel ford should replace my tires. I have drafted a letter to send them and also I'm sending one to the NHTSA to see if this is a wide spead issue.
I've spoken to the dealer, ford and sent and e-mail to Continental tires about this issue. After all that I still don't think Ford is going to do anything and it's very upsetting. I want to have faith in ford.
Docspanky, any help/ info you could give would be awsome.
