Borg Warner 4405 Problem? Please help!!
4.0/automatic (recently replaced,new tranny)
His truck has been clunking, he thought it was the rear end. I went with for a ride and told him the problem seems to be coming from the transfer case.
I checked and added 1.5 quarts of gear oil to the rear end.
I checked, drained and filled the transfer case with ATF. When I drained the transfer case, all that came out was 1/3 of a quart of dark, chocolate looking fluid. He has had this truck stuck in a swamp earlier this summer, im assuming this is where the dirt in the fluid came from, or its just broken down ATF. The fluid did not smell burnt and there were no metal shavings present.
When he goes to put the truck into reverse, there is grinding and it doesnt always go into gear. The truck goes into Drive just fine and the tranny fluid is full. I havent messed with the 4wd yet. I think the transfer case is shot.
Can anyone give me any input on what they think is wrong with this truck?
Thanks in advance for any help!
Im hoping you guys(and girls?) can help us, before it has to go into a shop.
