Please help in Identifying this Dana
I am unsure of what type of Dana It could be. I am hoping it is a 60,
If it isn’t a 60 I will probably sell it.
It looks like a Dana 60 but still unsure!!!

Here are the numbers
mfg date 8 10 7C1
bill of material 08741
oposite side of model number C or G 27717
the guy said it was a 60 and came out of a 77 3/4 ton
Well I removed the cover and found and interesting sight.
First the ring did not have “ Dana/spicer 60”
What it did have was
5 23 77 DANA 36774 B3058X 43-14 158
(158 was stamped upside down)
( I assume the 5 23 77 is a mfg. date)
Lying on the bottom of the case in the oil I found a gear. It is either one of the side gears or the pinion mate gear, can’t tell yet. The other 2 gears are not in there, but I did find teeth in the oil……
Can anyone help in identifying it and what the value of it would be if I decide to sell it.
Thanks nick

on the side of the case not near any webs, pockets or ribs there is
a cast number of 61-2.
does this help?
If you'll clean the left of the cover, you'll find more codes like the gear ratio.
Is it a front or rear axle?

That's it, it's a Dana 60, the actuall #61-2 indicates some running up dates, but I can't tell you what.
AUG 10 1977
I called Dana corp and the tech said that the bill of material number should be 6 or 7 numbers long, I thought I wrote them all down maybe I didn't. I will have to check again tonight.
When I told him about the 61-2 number casted on the pig near the yoke he quickly said it was "Yea it's a 61"!!!!
Now I am really confused.......
I called DTS and told him all the numbers and he said it was a
Dana 60 until I told him about the ring gear number, then he said 61!
Looking at the condition of the internals in the Trac-Loc I am wondering if someone pulled the Trac-Loc out of a 61 thinking it was a 60 and installed it into this housing (a 60 I hope)and it exploded!!
Could that happen????

Go to Google, or your favorite search engine and do a search on
"Dana 60" and "Dana 61", use the " marks. You'll find TONS of information.
The D61 is D60 unit that was made for the mid to late
70's Van and the need for a Higher gear ratio ie 3.30, 3.23, 3.08
etc required the use of a thin, (read weaker) ring gear then the trucks (D60) used. I suspect this is why you have found teeth in the case.
I would not spend any money on it. JMHO

They're VERY similar axles. Dirty already provided the difference.

Not surprised. I'd say posi hillbilly style. 61 is weaker. And they aren't supposed to be in the same axle. That's probably why he sold you this crud of an axle.
I did get on line this morning and took DSD advice to check out google and guess what I found.
Detroit Locker sells a unit for the 61 that handles gears from
354 - 456.
There was also a website about a guy who was able to figure out how to change the 61 thin gear setup to a 60 thick gear setup because he needed to run 488 gears.
If anyone would like the links to any one of these sites let me know.
I did get this dana for free, so if it is a 61 and not a 60, at least if I can use it, I feel good...
