Hi guys- my buddy is looking at a few pre-owned F150 STX's, (2004 4.6L's) for his business and I don't think that any of them have received the 30,000 mile tranny services, both are at about 60,000 miles. I know Ford recommends it, but how critical are they- can someone with some mechanical knowledge of these new trannys provide some insight into how they specifically function and how not changing fluids would be detrimental to their life?
Tranny fluid gets old and breaks down. Then it doesn't work the way it should, and will eventually lead to failure. If the price was right, I might take a truck with the old fluid still in it, but plan on changing it and the filter right away. Or else keep looking for a truck where all the recommended maintenance was done.
Chances are, if the PO skipped that, there are other areas that need attention as well.
That's kind of what I was thinking, about other maintenance. I guess we'll keep looking for someone with documented service.
Are these tranny's more sensitive to the condition of the fluid than previous tranny's? I heard that from a Ford Cert mechanic... Wondering if it is true or not.
