I'm looking at some late 80s early 90s trucks to replace my totaled 78 F-100 (I'm staying with the 300 six). The three speed manual tranny never gave me any problems after 220,000 miles, however, on the newer trucks how good are the trannys? I've looked at some cheaper late 80s trucks with the three speed automatic w/ the 300 six, I assume this is the C4, and some automatic overdrive trannys with the early 90s models. I would prefer a stick, but I've even heard that tranny isn't too hot. Any of you guys able to take your automatic trannys over 200,000 miles w/o problems, or for that matter the five speed? Any input is appreciated.
i have "that tranny" The M5OD. I actually like it. It shifts very smoothly. It cant handle a ton of power and is bad for towing i guess but i dont care.
you can still get the NP-435 4-speed behind the 300 six thru 1987 models. The 3-speed auto will be a C-6, not C-4. Bullit proof if taken care of with fluid and filter changes. Pull the dipstick and smell the fluid. if brown and burnt then walk away. Red and smelling like unburnt is good.
OK, thanks for the replies, I figured the 5-speed was OK for what I do (no towing) and the C-6 has been around for a long time so it must be solid, but some of these automatic overdrive trucks I've looked at I have to wonder about their transmission longevity. I'm still waiting on the insurance company to make their settlement offer on the ole 78, as soon as we come to an agreement I'm going shopping. Anybody have anything good to say about the automatic overdrive trannys, or bad?
