The manual says that the number is on top of the computer. Does anyone know where the computer is in a 2005 X? I do not want to pay the $50 to have them hook it on a computer.
I found it through the garbage hook. I removed the two screws shined a flash light and 5 minutes later I had the code. Here is the original thread I got it from.
"Markdubious... I have just purchased a 2002 Excursion, V10 and had the same Q. Here is what I found. You know the little hook for garbage bags... Remove the two screws that hold it in place. Then with flashlight in hand look through exposed hole, up towards driver defrost duct. You will see a a black box with several harness plugs attached. There will be a white tag with lots of numbers. The number for the door codes will be a FIVE digit number. It will be in large print compared to the other numbers on the tag.
Now that you have the factory code you can also add a new code of your choosing. Just follow the handy dandy instructions in the manual.HTH's
I have been very impressed with this form, it saved me $50 from going to the dealer.
yes man i love this place. i dont know what would do without these guys (on all superduty/excursion forums). they have saved me several problems, helped me find and diagnose problems, and give me DIY tricks to extract some more huevos from the motor!
Beware, some Excursions don't have the code ANYWHERE! I took the stupid computer out, opened it up like a nut and still, no code. SO rather than pay the dealer in New York $175 to get the code using a "New Generation Star" diagnostic decoder, I bought on on ebay for $700.
Figured I would need it for just about ANY troubleshooting on the car after reading the shop books and hearing their reference to the tool for virtually any troubleshooting.
Well the e-bay "ngs" tool was busted, so now I'm sending it off to the maker for $495 flat rate repairs. Yea, yea, I know...
Its costing me $1195 to get the keyless code, plus shipping.
Does anyone know where they would be on a 2000 model?? I don't have the card that is supposed to be in the manual.
I don't know what the "garbage hook" is??????
I have a 2000, we don't have the hook and I had no luck finding the codes either. It's been posted that with some contortions, and a mirror you can see this black box. Not me, I ended up having to have the left side injector harness replaced so I asked if they would grab the code for me, while they were diagnosing. They did, it was almost like getting $50-75 discount on a $500 job.
As far as I know the 2000 and 2001 have the same problem. The code is not printed anywhere on the truck. I actually took mine to the dealer to ask about it and they swore they knew right where it was. These guys were really nice and spent an hour looking everywhere and couldn't find it. They finally checked the tech manuel and found out that the only way to pull the code was with the computer and they would have had to charge me $60 for that.
I didn't do it and in the two years since then I've payed at least $75 getting my doors unlocked by tow truck drivers.
The moral of this story is pay now or pay later either way you're going to pay...
I found it, thanks to you guys. it right where you posted- removed the plastc hook, and way up in there where all the wiring harnesses are plugged in. very large, clear print.
I have a 2004 Excursion and my code was on the computer, which is located behind the garbage hook (in the middle of the dash board). Once you remove the panel, it takes a few minutes to locate but it is in there. Its almost straight back (slightly elevated) but only visible from the left side of the opening. The computer sits on a slight angle and is almost parallel to the ground.
Ok..Just found the keyless code on the computer of my 2004 Excursion 6.0 Diesel Limited. Tryed behind the garbage hook, and couldn't see the computer well. I then looked under the dash up and to the right of the gas pedal. You will see the back of a small box almost looks like it is laying on the heater outlets. You Must....MUST....Use a small mirror, I used my wifes make up/compact mirror and a flashlight and slid the mirror over the top of the computer and There it was... 5 large digits printed on a Ford label with a bar code... Entered the 5 digit code on the door key pad and the door lock opened. Dealer wanted $60.00 to hook up to the computer and tell me the code.........I won $60.00 yhanks to this forum..... Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!
On the 2000, I think the garbage hook was on the ash tray. My truck was broken into one night and the idiots only took my ash tray, $45 , with only a few $$ in there...
I would also like to find out my factory code. I hate having that feature and not using it but I also hate going to the dealer for ANY service work.

I have a 2000, the hook is dead center in the underside of the dash. It's that useless panel with two screws holding it on. My ashtray is a little one built into the middle of the cupholder. Maybe you have an optional larger ash tray that replaces the hook? Here's what mine looks like.
