I am in the process of painting my truck and I was thinking that since my back bumper is black why not paint the front one as well??? Is it possible to just sand down the stock front bumper that is kind of chrome(little bit of wear on that thing!), and just paint it, anybody know? suggestions??? thanks guys.
Personally I would have the bumper sandblasted so it was bare metal.. then I would prime it... and then paint.... dont forget a clear coat or two or three for good measure...
You could just sand it with lots of paper... I like the quicker method...
I scuffed up the chrome on my '78 w/ scotch brite, used Rustoleum Industrial Primer, & then Rustoleum Industrial Gloss Black......has lasted 4 years w/o any problems. I just scuffed up the entire surface, but the chrome wasn't peeling.
I posted this same question in the paint forum and aekisu i think it was said to scuff it up real good and put some good primer on it then paint it! IIRC thats what he said. you could scroll down to the paint forum and search "painting Chrome bumper" and it should pop up. i ended up just hitting it with the wire wheel on the grinder to get the rust off and scuffing it up with some sandpaper and painting it. It has only been a few months but it has held up.
Sorry Ranchero USA but I disagree. I have never had any luck with powder coating unless the metal was in perfect/new condition and all the edges are prepped perfectly with careful sanding. For an old chrome bumper, you're better off (and way cheaper) to go with home painting. Just make sure you rough up the surface thoroughly and prime really well with BLUE STEEL or RUST CHECK or some other high quality antirust undercoat first.
Right on guys, thanks alot. I think I will go with the cheaper mothod, sanding and then priming then painting, thanks for all the input, appreciate it.
My bumpers had minor rust and you can see the finished product on www.ranchero.us. the teal car. Every piece of chrome was done.In my opinion they came out awesome. I believe it was 50 bucks per bumper. Possibly the place that did it preps it differently than you? I am going to take my F-250 bumpers this winter to get them done also.
i had a rusted chrome bumper, i just scuffed it up real good..got the rust off it...primered it up with some spray paint and painted it black, with some clear coat....had it on the truck for a year now and no signs of peeling or cracking..still holding up pretty good...long as you sand off the chipped stuff and the rust...give it a good coat of primer and what ever kinda paint ya want...should hold up good...lots of clear coat for a nice shine!!
