Multiple Displacement V10

With the Ram HEMIs going with MDS this year I began wondering if Ford will attempt the same thing with the V10.

Would make sense, huh?

Boy, THAT sure would make the PSD owners flinch when we compare highway mileage!

Wink

Maybe that is the big secret with the the new 6.4, maybe it will be a 3.2 some of the time but that won't stop the diesel boys from disconnecting their EGR valves. I hope the V10 gets variable valve timing and has a Supercharger as a factory option. They could call it the Diesel Eater Pkg.

Anyone ever have their V10 go into the failsafe cooling mode? I have not, but I suspect that's one rough-running scenario. Seems like MDS would yield the same with the V10's balance issues & odd firing order.

Why would it be rough running?

Cutting out 5 cylinders (one entire bank) will yield exactly 1/2 the firings...

The V10 cylinders are 72 degrees apart, and it's an "even fire" setup, where it goes right-bank, left-bank, right-bank, left-bank, etc...

Think "Audi" ...

Oooh, one other thing to think about:

Because the difference between a 5.4 and a V10 in mileage is MAYBE 1 MPG given the same truck, what would shutting off half the cylinders do? I figure, at 1 mpg, and a 15MPH highway mileage (what mine does), the 5.4 with 16MPG gets 7% better fuel economy.

So, for 5 cylinders off on the highway, you'd see a 17.5% increase in mileage. Not too shabby. But that 15MPG would only climb to 17.6MPG if those calculations are even close to being right.

Although, I grew up with the Cadillac MDS being called all sorts of names, so I still shy away from that one

With the fly-by-wire throttle, it should be easy to increase the throttle when they shut off those 5 cylinders so you wouldn't notice the difference (much) when switching.

I was young when my father had one of the V8-6-4 engines. It had the readout that showed what mode it was in. There was a slight difference in the V6 mode. But the V8 and V4 was larger imperceptable from each other. It was only in 4 cyl mode under very little load.

I bought 10 cylinders and I want 10 cylinders firing.I'm not sold on this technology yet.It might be O.K. as an option, but I didn't buy a F-250 for fuel mileage.

Yeah, like how many times would 99% of these trucks be in 5-cylinder mode?

Why bother engineering that? If Ford does try it, they should stick to the 1/2 tons and below. If they do try it with Superduty's, it'll be a marketing gimmick.

(I only see two modes, 10 and 5 - any other combo doesn't work and it would obviously be "missing")

I'd rather see the V10 turbo charged and intercooled. Turbocharged just sounds better. Hows this for a badge;

-----TRITON-----
Intercooled Turbo
------V-1O------

All in blue with silver trim on the letters.

that would look good, so would super charged triton v10 for the fender badge
esp since ford racing already has the kits using a whipple charger. so all the work is done and all ford needs to do is make it in larger numbers
