I have a 1999 motor home with an F53 chasis ... v10 gas.
I have had two coils go ( which may have taken out the ECM ).
My mechanic wanted to replace all of them ( I had just the two bad ones as I was leaving the next day on a trip ... otherwise I would have done them myself) along with all the plugs.
The coils are original, I replaced the plugs at 75,000 miles ( I now have 110, 000 on it).
So ... rockauto ( I think the coils are DG508 ... I have to verify that ) $42 each.
Ebay, complete set of "no name" .... $75 for all 10!
Rockauto ... "supreme" coils $19 each
MDS, Accel, .... WOW, too many choices!
Any suggestions ??????
Also, any recommendation on plugs ... copper, platinum, iridium, .... autolite, bosch, champion, NGK .....
Way too many choices!
I tried to do a search for reviews but always come up with the same problem .... 75% give 5 stars, 20 % between and 5% one star. This seems to be the story no matter what brand.
Any advice !!!!!!!!!
I just don't want to loose another ECM .... it is obsolete and I had to camp out in a Ford garage during my last vacation while they found an aftermarket unit ... could not get a Ford unit anywhere!
Motorcraft coils and plugs. Platinum are good for 100k, however the 50-75k mile interval is probably more reasonable.
There is really no reason to change the coil unless it has failed. Changing the boots and springs is recommended. I would wait until you hit 150k before changing the plugs. Also change you fuel filter and get something to monitor the engine vitals like a scangauge2 or blue tooth dongle with tablet and torque app.
Don't use knock off coils. I replaced the ones in my mustang with a cheap set and as soon as I keyed on, I smoked 3 of them.....literally smoked. Only use motocraft coils.
When I bought my 99' V10 couple months ago, it had a miss in cyl. #9. The truck has 129,000 miles. Found it had Bosch plugs in it. I assume the previous owner replaed them at 100,000 or so. They looked good, but replaced them with Motorcraft platinum. I did however replace the coil on that cyl. with an Accel coil. So far so good. But if that one poops again, I will go with the Motorcraft coil instead.
I am guessing Rockauto is the cheapest at $42 each.
1) I keep coming up with two numbers .... DG473 and DG508 ... and some sites say they are interchangeable ... which is right????
2) I called Ford. They recommend an SP-479 plug. I asked about a platinum plug. They said not recommended .... why???? Is not a platinum plug better than a standard plug?
Thanks gain ..... Mike
