Personally, I think the 400 is a turd of a truck motor. I'll take any engine from the FE family or 429/460 over it any day of the week. No offense you guys with the 400s, but he did want my opinion. I remember this very topic coming up before so you might want to do a search on for my info.
The 400 is a good running motor, I'm running 2 of them. They get looked down upon because they are "smog" motors. The full potental of this engine was never developed due to emissions and fuel economy reasons. Check out the 351C/351M/400 forum
the 400 is an awesome motor, just needs more compression, a cam, 4v intake and a 600cfm carb, and headers, the basics for any motor, they are great, and with a 4 inch stroke, they really pull these heavy trucks. I had a truck with a 351m and a 2v carb on it, all it had was a glasspack muffler, single exhaust, and a small cam, and it would really run. They are just turds when they have 150k miles on them and are wore out, and down to 100hp, rebuild em, and they are great.

I like the motor, it has great potential. The first year they came out in 1971 when they were set up right they were real screamers but the EPA killed them the next year.
Boat anchor, I am in the process of taking my 400 out of my 78 f250 4x4, I hate it, If you plan on towing anything dont use the 400 they over heat every time. I bought a 460 out of a 75 2x4 getting it built and putting it in. Good luck.
I Have a 1977 400 I had rebuilt about 4 years ago It tows great with the right custom ground RV cam manifold and carb a very strong motor I invested 3000 total best thing I ever did I can pull my semi and belly dump loaded up a hill with no over heating. and almost climb a tree with it also
What are you going to use it for? I got a 400 and just took it to the mud drags and it smoked everyone else in the field. Ran stock then bumped up to super stock and still won. Beat out alot of 460's. Just my input.
I currently have a 400 motor in a F 350 dump. Modification are a Crane power max cam H272-2, holly streetmaster intake, hooker headers, and 4.10gear ratio. edelbrock 625cfm. Engine runs great, except for soft heads. The valve guides wear and vale seat surfaces do not last. With head for these vintage engines a junk yard only, go with a 351 W. Look for a late model with fuel injection and you can do away with all of the after market speed goodies.
All,
Technically speaking, the 400 is a diamond in the ruff!
Problem is, can you find the parts you need.
I have the ability to find alternative parts and calculate motor geometry, most people have neither the patience nor inclination for such games.
The 400 has the potential to be one of the best Fords ever let out the factory doors. Its a big block cleveland!
Find someone to help you at a machine shop or race track. A few smart mods and you'll be eating chevy big blocks for breakfast.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Oct-02 AT 09:05 PM (EST)]I have a 79 bone stock 400 in a F-250 2wd, never had a problem, it hauls my 8'5foot camper just fine. Never had any overheating problems either. People seem to either love them or hate them , in my opinion I love the 400.
As long as it doesn't say "chebbie" on it, it's a great motor!
