To tell them apart, look at your cranshaft pully, if its a 2 groove unit (only can have 2 belts) then you more than likely have a 240. Another easy way to check is to get a dowel or stiff wire and rotate the engine through a full cycle with the dowel/wire down the sparkplug hole on any cylinder. Mark it at the high spot, and low spot. Now i've just got to dig up the stroke specs on these engines to tell you the difference.
I belive all or virtually all parts between the 240 and 300 are interchangeable. I know for certain the heads are interchangeable between the two. Blocks will interchange...and a few others. I'm not certain about internal parts...but i'm sure some if not most of those will interchange also.
id never thought of that checking the stroke. the 300 has a stroke of 3.98 for a 1970. i doubt year would make a difference, but it may. i dont know much about these motors. put me infront of a jet engine though, and im golden
Yea, the pully thing is pretty accurate... Usually...A few
exceptions, but not many... Also the stroke of the 240 is
almost an inch less than the 300. I don't have my book,
but seems like the 240 is maybe 3.18 ?? or so, vs the 3.98
of the 300. Many people like to stick 240 heads on 300's
to get more compression. I've got one of each.
I gotta 68 F-250 with a 300, and a 74 F-100 with a 240.
I can tell the difference between the two just by sound
and feel when driving... The 240 revs about 4k higher
than the 300. A bit less torque at low rpms...
The 300 has a fairly "truckish" feel to it, with the sound,
low rpms, long stroke,etc... The 240 almost feels like a "big car" six, it's so smooth from the shorter stroke.
In fact, the 240 was used in a few galaxies...

oohh, so you said you can use 240 heads on the 300? What about some of those really nice and expensive crossflow 240 heads then? We could get some serious power increases from them hehe.
Maybe im just stupid, thats why im going to college, TOMOROW laff
