My son has a 2001 Explorer with the 4.0 engine and is away at college (far away).
Lately the the engine doesn't run right, if it starts, he must keep the accellerator almost fully depressed to keep the engine running. Some times it will start, and some time it won't.
He opened the hood, didn't see any thing abnormal but did hear a hissing noise as a fellow student worked the accelerator. A fellow student (works as a mechanic at GM dealership) said the plenam looked like plastic and thought the heat from EGR might have cracked the plenam.
Has anyone had this happen before, know what might be going on here?
My son to his truck up the Ford dealer today, and they said it needed an IAC.... In case someone else has the hisssing air noise and a truck that won't idle.
A hissing noise is ususally a vacuum leak. It will cause a rough idle/stall condition. The IAC is a common problem but if you have a vac leak too it won't fix the idle issue. Check for vac leaks.
