Student Caught In Racial Controversy
Flyers Promote White Student For African-American Award
OMAHA, Neb. -- Four Westside High School students are suspended for promoting a white student for an African-American award.
More than 150 flyers were distributed throughout the school Monday. They featured junior Trevor Richards, A South African native who moved to the United States in 1997.
Westside officials say the flyers were were quickly removed because they were inappropriate and insensitive to black students.
Trevor said he is as African as anyone else.
"I had no intent of hurting anyone or offending anyone. I wasn't trying to make a statement. I was just running for the award, but i guess the administration felt differently," Richards said.
Richards was suspended for two days.
Two other students were disciplined for putting up the posters and another student was punished for starting a petition to promote Richards.
Well, what do we have here? It seems as though a few enterprising young minds have found a loophole in the system to show us all how stupid we're being.
Bravo for them.
What the article failed to mention was that the award centers around Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke with compassion about the brutal truth that America faced during the fight for Civil Rights. He did not mince words. In his famous speech he gave in August of 1963 he said "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character" This sure sounds like what he wanted, and rightfully so...color to be a non-issue in our everyday life.
Do you think they deserved the punishment? I also heard a long time ago, it could be a urban myth, but a student from South Africa applied for a student loan. said she was from Africa.. got it, but
when they saw her and she was not "Black" revoked, said she was lying on her application
*scratching my head cluelessly*
Cant we all get along???????
That would be nice, but it will probably never happen. Now I have absolutely nothing against any race of people, but sometimes things just don't make sense. Like when it is one race it is ok, but when it is another it is not ok.
One thing I notice is that every year we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. day. He made his famous speech over 40 years ago but yet today there is still racialism going on and people are still judged by their color and not by their character. There is as much discriminating of blacks against the whites as their are whites against black people. Yes I agree with the speech he made, but apparently nobody has ever actually listened to his speech and taken his words to heart. This applies to just about every race. I would love to see the day when people of different races could be friends and live next door to each other without any problems.
These kinds of examples of reverse discrimination point out the futility of ever achieving meaningful racial integration. The same fuzzy-headed, feel-good thinking that permits and encourages minorities to separate themselves from the mainstream only serves to create more division. As the aforementioned example illustrates, skin color alone remains the basis for judgement among those who are supposedly 'enlightened'. How sad for all of us.

I agree. The establishment, government on all levels continue to promote racisim and the news media continues to 'educate' the masses in it. If the gov. does not want any racisim there would not be a "What race are you" question on any apps., there would not be any preference points for color.
I lost two great jobs to EEO quotes. I would be almost due to retire ifI would have landed one of them.
How many of you with children have had to fill out the school card that asks you basically what color you are...
It lists everything... OK I dont have a problem with that if it is for a census sort of objective... but there is no place to put simply I am white, it had everything under the sun including if you were Indian what tribe?
so under the
"Other" line.. too be a smart **** I put "white trash"
funny no one ever said a thing....
Are there limits on ancestry? If you believe paleo-anthropologists, all our ancestors originated in Africa - ergo we can all claim hyphenated status. You are considered native to the country you were born in, therefore native-American is a totally ambiguous designation. Anyone born here could rightfully claim such status - or again, is it a matter of skin color only? The hypocrisy of these minority designations is so vast one would expect the entire illogical construct to collapse into its own nebulous void and implode - saving us all further discourse on the subject.
I have to agree with if your born here ... your American
If you move here your now American from somewhere else
I dont care about the hyphen stuff.... I dont care what color you are
This whole country is made from people from somewhere else, which all came here to start anew, hence now American!
I am proud of my country, I love the diversity, I would not have it any other way... now having said that, why is it so hard for the rules to apply to everyone.
I feel like it is all a double edged sword... on one side I think its good that there is fair opportunity, but only to hire because of your color and not your ability is wrong... but then if we did not have those rules just how many people would be "fair" how many would hire the"minority" if they had a choice between 2..
Maybe I am naive and credulous to think that people as a whole would be fair and uphold the very thing this country stands for...
What a sticky wicket. This flare-up is symptomatic of a much larger problem--the refusal of society to engage in an open and honest talk regarding race. That is the real travesty here.

If a black fellow living in America (or his ancestors) was originally from Tahiti or some such non-African place, would he still be required to list himself as "African-American". If so, and in light of some of the earlier posts, then "African-American" is nothing more than a euphemism for "black" (or "colored", or the term of the minute), and is evidence of political correctness tripping over its own - ah - shoelaces.

Are you meaning a man of African descent but born or residing originally in Tahiti? Hope so since Polynesians aren't "black".
Regarding the original post, it seems to me the white student is more "African American" than any of the blacks I know since he is from Africa. I have never understood why people call themselves African considering they have never even been there, nor were their parents from there, nor grandparents. STUPID!!!!!

I'm sorry. I seem to be geographically challenged. I was thinking of that island down by Bermuda, that was recently in the news when several boats of people from there were intercepted by the Coast Guard and returned to their island.
I guess the question I should have asked first is: Is Africa the only country that has black people born and living within its borders?
