'78 F250 460 EFI Conversion

I want to convert my 1978 F250 that currently has a carburated 460 to EFI. Is it possible/recommended to swap an EFI system, i.e. intake, computer, sensors, etc. onto my existing 460? Or is it better and/or easier to swap an entire 460 EFI engine into the truck?

In either case, what vehicles should I look at as potential donors - year, model? Are there different types of EFI on 460s that I should consider? I've read that California trucks had mass air systems, but I also read something about the Califonia EFI computer systems being too complex? Are all the non-California 460 EFI systems throttle body?

Bottom line question is - is there only one type of 460 EFI or is there multiple types of EFI for 460s? If there is more than one type, which one is the best (in terms of donor vehicle model and year)?

To start you off, the heads are different on a carbed motor to a EFI motor, therefore intakes not being directly interchangable. Id probably go with the whole motor unless you have a descent bottom end built already. I found a whole donor truck (88f250 2wd 460 c6) for real cheap that needs a bit of motor work, and converted so i can use my 4 speed, all going into my 79 f150 4x4. Its a speed density motor, which is basically mass air's retarded little brother. It is a bit more picky about mods and what not, but still acceptable. 94-95 and i believe and newer used mass air systems. Hope some of this helped.

I'm pretty sure that only 96 - 97 Califorina & Massachusetts 460s were MAF.
