Drive by wire.

What do you think about the drive by wire system, which doesn't actually connect your foot to the throttle.

I like it. Sure, the computer could go bad, but a throttle cable can snap as well...

stupid. brother in laws tempo has it- the potentiometer on the pedal gets junk in it or has a bad spot and "sticks"- at about 2000 rpm. REALLY annoying.

Tempos did not have drive by wire. They were all cables.

2003 was the first year that Ford cars had drive by wire. The Powerstroke diesel has had it since it's first year in 1994.

Not crazy about the time-lag involved, but otherwise works OK. Probably more reliable overall than the mechanical unit, but stupefyingly expensive to replace if and when anything does go wrong.

I have a feeling it's one of those things that is going to become standard in a few years on most passenger vehicles. But I too have my reservations about leaving the steering in the hands of computer (and its related circuitry). At least with regard to something like ABS there is a "fall back" to the original mechanical brakes when the ABS system fails. I'm not sure whether the DBW system has a similar type of security net, but I don't think so, from what I can gather.

One of the benefits of the DBW system, I suppose, is more room in the passenger compartment because the steering column can be eliminated. But does anyone know of any other benefits that it will bring?

dad's semi has it and we both hate it, when the sensor gets dirty, which isnt hard on a farm, the truck sputters like he is goosing the pedal, as soon as he cleans it it is fine again.

imo, if it aint broke, dont fix it.

If fighter jets and nuclear subs can use them, why not cars/trucks. I hope that soon, there will be a heads up display on all cars, so you don't have to take your eyes off the road to look at gauges.

If it is a one for one deal, I don't have a problem with it. I have feeling that it is another way of controlling the way that you drive. I saw a show about new cop devices in which they are working with auto makers to have a kill switch for high speed chase so they can turn off the car.....could this be the device??

As a throttle control, I might be able to get used to it. It seems that much of the throttle control is already in the hands of the computer if you consider the TPS and even electronic fuel injection in general.

What worries me is that these DBW applications are going to be utilized in steering systems, as well, and that to me is a whole different ball game.

I was talking more about the electronic throttle control. My mother's '04 Trailblazer has it. You cant spin the tires, even though I know the engine is more than up to it. It's quite annoying also, when going up hills, you dont really have to move your foot to not lose speed, but you can hear the engine pulling harder. It just makes the whole throttle feel mushey. Of course, she drives like a grandma, since she is one, and it works just fine for her. Good thing I dont have to drive it too often.

Now I know why when I set the cruise control on my 01, the pedal does not move when climbing a hill. Man, I am learning more things about this 01 than I ever did about the 96. Talking about brain burnout and I have not even got the chance to start modifying it yet.
