I have a 96psd that is almost to the 200000 mile mark .I have to change glow plugs before next winter probably do the wiring harness too. I have no current problems except for a intermitant loss of cruise control.I run a older superchips microtuner set at the safe tow , a B&D downpipe , and a K&N filter in a slightly modified stock air box. Is there anything I should be looking for problems with at this time . I use this truck as my daily driver it is rock solid reliable. I would appreciate any and all info thanks.
Scrap the K&N filter ASAP; mine just cost me a new turbo (some damage was done before the K&N; it just finished the job). On the cruise issue, try removing the lower cover from the steering column & using Q-tips sprayed with WD40 to clean the contact tracks behind the wheel. If your harnesses don't have the metal retaining springs, they're the old style & should be replaced. If you've never changed them, it's likely they're the antiques.
I gotta agree with DaBigTow about the drop in K&N filters. They don't seal properly in the factory air box (although neither does the stock filter). If you want to run a K&N, I'd suggest an aftermarket cone or round type on a different intake tube. As for other problems, I'd say check the belt, hoses, brakes, etc... Change the fluids in the diffs, transfer case, and tranny. Keep a spare CPS in the glove box. Change the oil and fuel filters regularly and add Diesel Kleen to the daily diet. Just regular routine maintenance stuff.
i am soo glad to read about another psd that is easilly cruising past the 200k mile marker... i HOPE to run my mule for many many many years to come... posts like yours lead me to believe that i can..!
Thanks for the info I will check out the contacts for the cruise asap. As far as the K&N filter goes I pull it and check intake for dust and sofar so good. But I have giving some serious thought to installing a Tymar setup I just need to find one. And as far as making it past the 200000 mile mark this sucker is paid for and I plan having it for a long long time its just that good of a truck. My dad has a 2002 f250 c.c. psd with about 60000 on it and everynow and then he drives mine and he tells me if you didnt look at the odometer you would think it only had 50 or 60000 miles on it. I change the oil and filter every 5000 miles less if I do a lot of towing. I use rotella t 15/40 and motorcraft filters I change the fuel filter every 10000 miles I also give her a shot of diesel kleen every month or if I take a trip somewhere ( strange fuel ) .
The FTE sponsor Fleet Filters carries the 6637 air filter and it is only 19 bucks, plus shipping. I run the K&N air intake and have no problems with dirt getting by, but when i got the truck there was a K&N drop in and the intake had a little dust inside. I hope my truck makes it to 200,000 that would rock!
