Intake, exhaust, chip got to let the engine breath better and then add the fuel. I would recommend doing it in that order. Got to have the foundation 1st before adding fuel. If not, that can be disastrous.
Do a search here for the "kwik mod".
The filter is 19 bucks from fleetfilter and it's all you need for the intake.
You may see an increase in mpg also.
That sounds like an average boost number for bone stock.
that is exactally what my stock 02 got... unplug the wastegate actuator got me to 22... intake and exhaust upgrades and the predator tuner on the 60hp setting i have no problem hitting 25 psi... the difference is the power... 22psi on a stock setup is really nice.. 25psi with upgrades and the tuner is impressive...!
More boost on your stock truck isn't going to make anymore power. As stated above build the foundation first: intake, exhaust, then chip or tuner. If you already have the AIS then yes that will be fine for a mild power increase. If not then look into the KWIK filter, it will flow plenty for the power increase you are looking for. Next step is exhaust, shop around and you will find a good price. In my opinion stainless is great but not really needed, aluminized will last a long time. A 3.5" downpipe and 4" exhaust is all you need, you can go bigger if you want. Then its on to the chip or tuner, for the power increase you want a tuner will make you very happy and give you the ability to read and clear codes. Without the chip or tuner supplying more fuel the extra boost you want won't make any power increase.
just a quick clarification... unplugging the wastegate actuator gives you more boost by preventing the wastegate from dumping it before it should... this mod will not give you more power, it will let your truck make the power a stock truck makes QUICKER... you will feel a slight "seat of the pants" difference in acceleration, but you won't make any more hp or torque... the key to making boost is the fuel... dump more fuel... more fuel burns.... the gasses coming out of the combustion chamber expand even more... applying more pressure to that side of the turbo.... which applies more pressure on the intake side of the turbo... which gives you more boost... but... do that with your stock intake and exhaust and your egts skyrocket...! if you don't have a pyro gauge to monitor those egts and you do a tuner or a chip... you will eventually end up with a dead psd...! and that is a hanging offense..! now... here is what happened to me... i got a boost gauge... stock with the wastegate mod = 22 psi... new intake and upgraded exhaust, (the walker btm), and a predator tuner = 26 psi boost... so you say.. i only added 4 lbs of boost... not true... i could be running much higher boost numbers, but the less restrictive exhaust brings the boost back down while it also brings down the EGTS...! at least this is how it was explained to me... so.. psdpower is right when he says more boost does not always mean more power... it's a little complicated... if someone can explain this any better... please do...!
Yes Johnny, I can explain it in easier terms.
It's called magic!
Ford hired magicians with heap big power.
All said and done, Johnny8's rundown is on the up & up.
Get gauges, open up the intake and exhaust (any order on these).
Then, AFTER ALL of the above, get a chip or tuner.
Not to be a buzzkill ... but after you get all that and the tuner - alert a good friend who cares about you, your truck, and your tranny - so they can have a TUNE-ANON INTERVENTION and get you to take out the 110 HP tune :-)
and socaldieselfan... you ARE a buzkill...! LOL..! but, you are correct... if you add a ton of power and then start funneling it through a stock tranny... start saving your pennies because you'll need them..!
i just had the tranny done and also a better torque converter. but any way is the BTM only good enough on the exhaust upgrade. i only want about 60 hp max for my truck. i have all the gauges installed also. i was also leaning towards the ais intake with the fender boot??? my engine only has 46000 so im still in warranty
